Discussion: Buttigieg Draws Comparison Between Trump And Bernie Supporters

That Fraud Khanna should STFU. Buttigieg was talking about the supporters, not the candidates.
An opportunist like Khanna would suck up to Trump if it suits his needs.

He’s correct. In fact its so obvious that its been said over and over since 2016. He’s not the first to recognize it. Another comparison little noticed is the destructive intensity of MANY of their supporters against any who threaten their adored choice. I said ‘many’. I voted for Bernie in the 2016 primaries. I still like him. Its many of his supporters I find noxious, obnoxious and destructive. Those that have chosen the name ‘Jacobin’ think that’s complimentary?!?!

The only real similarity between Trump and Bernie supporters is that they both support something. (Individual cases may vary.)

Think we’ll get to 300+ comments with this one? Ron Paul people used to carpetbomb articles like this one.

You are aiming very low.

Since between 10% and 16% of people in WI, MI and PA who supported Sanders in the primaries ended up voting for Trump in the general election (more than enough to swing the election), Buttigeig makes an excellent point.

If Trump, tomorrow, said “The wall is a stupid idea, it’s expensive and will do nothing to deter immigration or crime, and besides, those people who come here work hard doing jobs that make America better and raise children who become good citizens,” what would happen?

If Bernie, tomorrow, said “The 1% aren’t evil, and although we need to tax them more, they perform an important function in our economy, which, by the way, is made more wealthy by trade deals, and the $15 minimum wage doesn’t make sense for all the communities across our nation, which need flexibility to deal with their own circumstances, and finally, strengthening Obamacare is the best outcome we will get,” what would happen?

It’s pretty clear whose supporters would desert them, and whose would change the talking points they parrot overnight. And yet, only one of these two people is accused of leading a “personality cult.”

Let us pretend for a moment that those numbers are not largely imaginary (which they are). Do you think that any of those voters would have voted for Hillary if only Bernie had not run?

He’s not wrong.

Except that everyone knows the real political drivers of Trump’s campaign are racism, authoritarianism, and right-wing hatred - not economic populism.

Hahah… some kick-buddimentum—nice.

I don’t support Bernie in the primary.

That said, wanting to blow up the system to further enrich the already rich and wanting to blow up the system for a functioning safety net are not comparable.

Odd hypothetical. Trump has built his brand on his cons. The wall for him is just one of many cons. He could let it go if it didn’t cause a backlash at Fox. Bernie on the other hand has had only one mantra since the 1960s. It is who he is.

Berners would not desert Bernie based on your hypo. They are a cult. If substantive policy issues mattered more than personality, they’d go for Warren.

Trump has built his brand on Mexicans and Muslims. Period.

Call me crazy but I like Bernie’s message of Medicare for all and taxing Billionaires.

Exactly which is why Bernie isn’t the right guy this time. His ego won’t allow him or his people keep the eye on the prize…defeating DJT, regardless of the nominee. Bernie had his chance in 2016. Sadly it didn’t work out, but it’s time to stay focused and not screw the pooch over pettiness while the criminal king sees another term.
