High Country News cites possibilities such as BIA investigations, proposed budget cuts, and lack of a director until seven months into Zinke’s tenure, mass employee reassignments (h/t to TPM).

“In addition, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, like the Department of the Interior in general, has pervasive issues with harassment…” “…Bureau of Indian Affairs had the highest rates of harassment in the department overall…” with 40 percent of survey respondents experiencing sexual and racial harassment in the previous 12 months.

The administration has made no secret around efforts to diminish Native American sovereignty. Their land rights, guaranteed by multiple treaties and agreements, encompasses vast mineral resources. Also, their casinos have made a huge impact on Nevada, Jersey, and other markets traditionally controlled by the “right people”. Until control is re-established in Cuba, we’ll see what happens.
