Discussion: Brutal Mississippi Primary Convinces College GOP Chair To Switch Parties

So does that make Alvarez a Dixie-can’t?

He probably shouldn’t be in the Democratic Party, either

However long it takes, by any means necessary! Who of us know the personal journey of this young man toward his conversion experience?

“This train is bound for glory, this train!..Welcome aboard , little children, there’s room for many a’more!”

Why not?

It’s all in the framing. You see a right-leaning Democrat. I see a Republican of some local repute standing up to the Tea Party and decrying the extremism that has strangled the GOP. TPers certainly don’t listen when Democrats say it, and may not even listen when Republicans say it, but if enough members of their own party finally say “Hell no!” to the Tea Party, it will eventually have an effect.

Evan Alvarez should be commended for his courage. He’s not moving – he’s staying right there, in the belly of the monster, and telling them to fuck off. That’s a lot braver than worrying about his influence on Democratic platforms.

I know - I’m totally joining the Tea Party because there aren’t any liberal Dems left.

Seriously, it’s probably better to have him inside the tent pissing out, than outside the tent pissing in, as LBJ said.

Carry On.

Well, the College Repubicans aren’t exactly joining the military or burning their white sheets in public, so I wouldn’t attribute his personal decision to the whole Frat/Soror/Legacy structure that births them.

Agreed, an excellent start. I like your outlook.

Do you know him personally?

And what positive thing did you do for the Democratic Party today?

I’d say just the opposite from reading the article.

Amen! I don’t see the sense in putting someone down because they didn’t join our side fast enough or because they might be more conservative than we’d like. It’s silly, really. We should be yelling from the rooftops that all are welcome in the Democratic Party, that anyone is free to come to our side and you will be welcomed with open arms. As the GOP continues down this path, more and more Republicans are going to be taking a second look at the Democratic Party, wondering if maybe all those things they heard about liberals aren’t really true.

True enough. I was a College Republican during my freshman year and supported Reagan over Ford. I got better.

Agreed, after all it is the Mississippi Democrats.

It seems you conflate “Right leaning Conservatives” with “right wingers”. They are quite different!

One can work with conservatives on common goals and actually achieve something. The ACA is a prime example. For those old enough to remember, the 1965 Civil Rights Act is another.

A Mississippi Republican named Alvarez? ::eye roll:: If this is what it took you to leave that wackadoodle party, I’m not interested in having you as a Democrat.

Yes! The Democratic Tent is too goddamn big! Let’s drive out everybody who’s not ideologically perfect! Drive out the Infidels!! Station Certified Pure Progressives® outside polling stations to make sure that no former Republicans vote for Democrats!!! The Path to Power is Purity!!!

Some of the most loyal and strident Democrats I’ve known are former Republicans. My dad became a Republican in the 60’s after returning from Vietnam. My grandmother cleaned house for the local Republican Party boss and he gave my dad a job, but he had to register as a Republican. He’d been a Republican every since, though he hadn’t voted for one in years, until 2012 when he finally got off his duff and changed his registration.
