Her reluctance to insert herself in international relations is understandable. But it seems she could have notified her diplomatic liaison she had suddently taken ill and would be unable to meet with Trump. Everyone involved would have known EXACTLY the message she was sending while she maintained plausible deniability.
Maybe Iām mistaken and the Obamas did gift her the brooch on the same day Trump visited.

The brooch she wore when meeting Trump was most famously worn by her mother at her fatherās funeral. It carries great significance relating to George VIās strong relationship with Churchill (whose own mother was American) and the past close relationship between the US and the UK, which is now ādeadā with Trump as president.

This is what monarchs and popes do, they refuse to make overt political gestures but signal their thoughts and preferences in subtler forms. I have no doubt that after this meeting the Queen probably scrubbed her hands raw and downed several gin and tonics.
