Oh yeah, you totally burned him your majesty.

That was SOOO much more effective than refusing to meet with him and making public statements about how awful and dangerous he is.

Her reluctance to insert herself in international relations is understandable. But it seems she could have notified her diplomatic liaison she had suddently taken ill and would be unable to meet with Trump. Everyone involved would have known EXACTLY the message she was sending while she maintained plausible deniability.

Maybe Iā€™m mistaken and the Obamas did gift her the brooch on the same day Trump visited.

Kate Riga, thatā€™s not Her Majestyā€™s only slight against Trump using jewelry.

The brooch she wore when meeting Trump was most famously worn by her mother at her fatherā€™s funeral. It carries great significance relating to George VIā€™s strong relationship with Churchill (whose own mother was American) and the past close relationship between the US and the UK, which is now ā€˜deadā€™ with Trump as president.

This is what I needed this morning.

Will Trump be able to heed the advice not to mean tweet the Queen?

Doubtful.

Plus ā€œgiftedā€ Why oh why have we turned our back on ā€œgivenā€? Everywhere that politicians and non-profit leaders go, they spill out this awkward noun-turned-to-verb, when ā€œgivenā€ works so well.

Look at where it is generally used, and you will find that people are trying to make a nice point even nicer by upping their use of language. ā€“ Iā€™m not against using it as an adjective, e.g.ā€œObama was a gifted statesmen.ā€ But please, not as a verb, or that even worse verb turned back into a noun ā€œgiftings.ā€

Still it was delightful that Elizabeth found a way to express her appreciation for the fine statesman we used to have with a dig at the buffoon who is occupying the White House these days.

Point taken. I guess I canā€™t expect her to be holding the string to a trump-baby-blimp off a Buckingham balcony anytime soon. It seems like a pretty mild dis to me but I wonā€™t pretend to get royal protocol.

Anything short of a hammer blow to his forehead is way to subtle for Trump to understand.

Getting burned by something not nearly as gold as it appears to be is basically speaking Trumpā€™s exact language.

This is what monarchs and popes do, they refuse to make overt political gestures but signal their thoughts and preferences in subtler forms. I have no doubt that after this meeting the Queen probably scrubbed her hands raw and downed several gin and tonics.
