Long before Brian Williams was caught lying about his chopper coming under fire in Iraq, he claimed he’d stared down the barrel of a bandit’s gun as a teenager in sleepy Red Bank, NJ.
In a 2005 interview with Esquire magazine, Williams said a thief drew on him in the 1970s — leaving him “looking up at a thug’s snub-nosed .38 while selling Christmas trees out of the back of a truck.”

I’ve thought of Brian Williams as a decent guy. He may still be a decent guy, but his credibility as a journalist is toast.

I think the flood gates have opened on this one. In the coming weeks I predict that we’ll hear that Brian Williams habitually tells whoppers to make himself look heroic. It’s surprising as he’s already so successful. Why the need to embellish? Either he’s deeply insecure or just a plain old liar.

Course it had already been fired before it had been put on display but it was STILL scary!
It is a good lesson to remember that we should not automatically believe everything we hear, especially when we’re listening to ourselves. Thanks, Brian. You are still loved. We know this is all Jon Stewart’s fault. Tell me Cronkite and Murrow didn’t embellish. Just remember, real or imagined, it is still karma. People need to lighten up.

I have great sympathy for Brian Williams. I am still having flashbacks from the time I saved Sylvester Stallone and Chuck Norris at the Battle of Khe Sahn in 1968.

I think so. At this point it’s clear that, however innocently, he makes stuff up. When he tells a story you can’t trust that it’s basically true. I don’t see how he can fix that—in his role, it’s fatal. He’s got to go.

What drives me to distraction is why any journalist would need to do this kind of embellishment. You are already in the middle of a fucking war zone that you do not have to be in. You have already proven that you have balls. Why create a bunch of fucking lies that, in this modern age of instantaneous communication, are bound to be found out?

How do you look down the tube of an RPG? I can see looking down the tube of an RPG launcher.
I know memory is malleable, but unfortunately for Williams’, his credibility his gone at this point.
There is still time for Williams to announce his run for the White House!

I don’t think the article is truthful when it says that he has admitted to lying. He has admitted to telling something that is not true but not intentionally. His memories got mixed up. That makes him a bad journalist but not a liar.

His statement says it had been fired and it hit the chopper ahead of his.
This aligns with the known facts.
