Discussion: Brennan: What Will Trump Decide Is A 'National Emergency' 'Next Week?'

Not gun violence which is an actual national emergency.
Nor playing footsy with the Russians but he really doesn’t plan to poke that snake.

Could be almost anything. The Mueller Report? Don Jr’s indictment? Ivanka’s line of schlock being dropped by another major retailer?

Whatever it is, you can be sure it is something that will affect Trump personally and not something that will affect national security or the welfare of the American people.

Too many Dictatorships start out “legally”. Trump is too ignorant to have read that. But his handlers and enablers are well aware.

If there is one thing that Trump has “manned up” about, it is this:

Trump has attracted the majority of the venom directed at the Putin takeover. He wallows in it. He revels in it as a pig wallows in the trough.

But I have never wavered from my conception that:

  • In his own way, Chuck Todd is a member of Trump’s Team
  • In his own way, Mitch McConnell is a member of Trump’s Team
  • In his own way, Vladimir Putin is a member of Trump’s Team
  • In its own way, SCOTUS is a member of Trump’s Team

And there you have it: an armed force, as it were…covering all the bases:

Media, Legislative, Foreign Power, Judicial…each meriting, in fact, more concern and scorn than Trump could attain on his own.

If the congress refuses to squash this power grab by overriding tRump’s expected veto, they are just giving cover to tRump for his next emergency whereby he pulls an Idi Amin and declares himself president for life. This is put up or shut up time for the GOP

For Cheeto Mussolini ANYTHING that lowers his “ratings” with his base of knuckle-dragging racists and misogynists is a “National Emergency” that can only be fixed by throwing money at it stolen from other parts of the Government to quiet the ravings of the Rabid-Reich-Wing-Radio-Hosts who control his ignorant minions.

Like any other weak “Emperor with no clothes”, his only “solution” to any “crisis” is; Bread and Circuses.

Bingo! And shame on anyone who believes otherwise

I hope they do the right thing, but sadly…

The situation you describe is accurate.

One more reason to gaze in stunned amazement at people like Chuck Todd and his ilk, who manage to equate the Trump madness with “business as usual”.

Normalization of Trump is as much a tactic on the Trump team as “Bomber Harris” of the RAF and his tactic of city-bombing in WWII.

Both horrible…but both utile.

Wow! Is Brennan actually saying that we should require factually correct information … then follow the Constitution to ensure each co-equal branch of government complies with its designed function … and steer clear of self serving frivolity while performing the duties of our positions.
Is this guy for real?

“It sets a very dangerous precedent. We don’t know what Mr. Trump might decide next week or next month is going to be a national emergency,”

It’s amazing how long it took to get to this fundamental point, which speaks right to the incremental character of the Trumpoid power creep.

Recall that everyone was originally going on about how the it was a precedent that could allow the next Dem president to deal highhandedly with guns or climate; as if.

Unfortunately this venom may well systemically infect our future through those with the insistent view that our politics must be rigidly symmetrical despite all evidence of otherwise.

So when a Democratic President needs to call a National Emergency, the poison will emerge.

What will Trump decide is a “national emergency” next week?

No more Taco Tuesdays?

A Democratic president must declare a national emergency on climate change. Day One.

There’s my new word for the day. Since this is your area, how would it have gone without Harris?

And on the Second day, she declared the emergency of the Guns. And it was good.

It’s time to clear the field.

True: global climate change is both a global and national emergency.

And we have a number of political tools to address the issue. The question becomes, is what is the best most productive way forward? Calling a national emergency may not be that. My understanding, what it does is give the President some discretion to move money to immediate needs. But climate change is a long term problem with more resource needs than short term funds.

I am not certain of the best road forward, I am hoping for political leaders with vision and moxie to address the problem.

Trump’s national emergency declaration sets a “dangerous precedent” for a mercurial president.

Mercury:
The Roman equivalent of the Greek Hermes, Mercury is the god associated with trade and commerce, with eloquence and communication, and with liars, frauds and thieves.
Mercury is also a metallic element with the chemical symbol Hg and atomic number 80. It was extensively used in mining because of its affinity for gold. However, it is now known to be hazardous, causing damage to the central nervous system, disturbances to speech, poor co-ordination, discoloration of the skin especially on the face, memory impairment and emotional instability.

“Mercurial president”. Indeed.
