Discussion: Brennan Critiques Manafort’s ‘Extraordinarily Lenient’ Sentence

Bet that Manafort never pays the $50k fine and $25Mil restitution.

Well its just another white collar crime that doesn’t matter.

Well, it’s only fair that Manafort’s sentence is less than what an African-American would get for a couple ounces of pot.

He’s white…

And white collar crime pays. Bigly.

Does anyone know where he will serve his time? Camp Cupcake? I am wondering who his fellow inmates will be. And, I bet he experiences a miracle and rises out of that wheelchair to walk again.

Now I’m really curious to see his sentencing in Virginia next week. Methinks Judge Jackson is going to be a wee bit tougher on him. Ellis was reported to be in the bag for Manafort from the beginning; this short sentence (which is still 4 years in the clink) simply confirms my suspicions about him.

And let us not forget that Brennan Knows Things. If Ellis was in the tank from the beginning, it’ll come out. As with Anthony Kennedy, there may be no penalties–but it’ll come out.

Elections matter… look at what McConnel is doing to the judicial system. This lenient sentence is just the tip of the iceberg for wacky judicial actions as the Trump / McConnel Judiciary dominates the federal judiciary. The only hope for the near future is more cases moving to state courts.

This is what is most galling. Everything else equal, if Paul Manafort was black he would have gotten 15 years minimum. Disgraceful.

Don’t be so sure. State courts are even more corrupt than Federal, or so it often seems.

Judge probably save POTUS from digging a deeper self-inflicted Conspiracy-Cover-up hole.

By giving Manafort 47 months, with good behavior he can be out in 24. He’s served 9 months so he only has to serve another year before he can get paroled.

DJT now doesn’t have to pardon him until Manafort is out of prison which totally changes the optics of the move. Instead of letting his homie out free…he shortens the sentence using the Judge’s own words about extreme sentencing…or he pardons Manafort when he is released from prison.

Judge did DJT a biggly favor and saved him from himself. POTUS can sign the pardon as he walks out of the door.

That is true, but at least Trump can not pardon the state convictions. Additionally we are just starting to see the affect of his appointments.

a coup d’était. has occurred. Manafred “lived a blameless life.” Goebbels would be proud. The big Lie. works when you have taken over a country. whats next?

No. Max federal time off for good behavior is 15%.

I expected Ellis to sentence well below the guidelines. I was thinking 8-10 years range. That would have been disgusting, but keeping it under 4 years was just plain insulting.

About 8 months ago before Manafort had so many additional charges added, I predicted he would get 3 to 5 years and be in a minimum security facility. I figured he may even be able to get a pass to leave with an escort and GPS monitoring for a home conjugal visit. Or maybe to just launder his money. With what he has left, can’t take too long.

Never thought I would stand of chance of being right after all the additional charges were brought. Like they say, next week will tell the story.

It’s not over yet for Big Paulie, let’s hope there will be justice at the state level.

Thanks for pointing this out. Math was never my metier, but 47-9 months (for time served) = 36 months. Thirty-six months - 15% (for good behavior) = 30.6 months. Utter slap on the wrist.

He gets 9 months knocked off his sentence for time served for witness tampering. We are watching whiteness, wealth, and privilege at work in our court system.

The 15% is applied to the 47 months. But… I’m not sure the current time served reduction will apply to this sentence because he was in jail for different crimes (witness tampering & conspiracy to commit same) than for what he was sentenced to 47 months. We’ll know next week.
