Discussion for article #247059
Who?
Good choice, but I wonder who the back up is?
Thought he’d nominate Sri.
Color me not thrilled. The guy is 63, and is about as middle of the road as you can find.
With all due respect to Judge Garland, maybe Obama should consider nominating somebody who isn’t a 63 year old white guy.
Seriously, even if you get him on the bench it’s less than two decades before he needs to be replaced. And he’s not a minority or a woman so he doesn’t cause nearly as much trouble as another candidate might for swing state GOP senators up for reelection to obstruct even if he is the Chief Justice of the DC Court of Appeals.
Makes me think that Obama thinks he’s not going to get through and is saving more progressive judges for Hillary(hopefully). At least that’s my read.
I’m sure he’s absolutely qualified, but I think you have to nominate much younger justices. Nominating someone over 60 limits your impact on the Court. Look at Thomas, Scalia, Alito, and Roberts. All were 55 or younger. That’s how the GOP will maintain influence over the court. Garland will be one of the ten oldest nominees, I believe, and tied for the oldest in the last 80 years.
That’s a possibility. GOP rejects Garland and President Obama sends up his real choice next.
Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), the longest serving Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, offered his own thoughts on who President Obama should nominate to fill the seat left open by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia last week. “[Obama] could easily name Merrick Garland, who is a fine man,” Hatch told the conservative news site Newsmax, before adding that “he probably won’t do that because this appointment is about the election. So I’m pretty sure he’ll name someone the [liberal Democratic base] wants.”

It’s checkmate. Orrin Hatch was just praising this guy a week ago. How in hell can the GOP now - with a straight face - say they’re not going to do their part?
I’m all for another moderate on the US Supreme Court. Balance is needed. I wouldn’t want a court that’s too liberal/too conservative.
OK then. Let the face off begin! ___ The GOPers obstruct at their own peril, because when Hillary sends up a candidate, the obstructionist GOP bastards will really begin to weep, wail and gnash their teeth!

I guess I will be googling that name a few times. Obama loves throwing those curve balls LOL!
Maybe Hatch knew Garland was warming up in the bullpen, and saw a way out of his mess?
Thanks for that. Missed the article. Your link is not working though, so here it is.
Obama just offered the GOP Senators a Blue pill. If they don’t accept it, then Hillary or Bernie will stuff a red pill down their throats. I am loving this.

We will hear more in 51 minutes, but my belief is that this is all politics. Obama likely believes that the Senate will not do anything but obstruct, and having them obstruct this perfectly qualified old white guy is going to give them the biggest challenge in the Senate races. So, you might as well go with him – it makes the Democrats look sane, and will make the GOP look insane.
That’s what I love about the DC press and pundits, all their inside “knowledge” and wild speculation amounts to a hill of beans.
