Discussion: BREAKING: Maine Becomes First State To Expand Medicaid By Popular Vote

Will Mr LePage now do a Trumpy - have a tantrum ?

Maybe he’ll get so wired up that he packs his toys and goes home (i.e., quits).

Wouldn’t that be a thing?

(Hey, a girl can dream, can’t she???)

The Republicans in Washington can go two ways with this: Hunker down and take healthcare access away from voters, who clearly want it, as a last great act of defiance. Or they can do the right thing.

Either way, they’re likely on their way out of a job.

I’m so happy I’m crying. Tears of relief after a year of disappointment.

Honestly, I can’t figure out how this abscess can live inside his own skin for even a single day.

Actually, what this reminds me of a bit is the fight for marriage equality. It kept getting killed in state legislatures and even ballot initiatives like Proposition 8. Then it won in a few state supreme courts – including Iowa – supported it. There were some legislative actions. Meanwhile, public opinion was slowly shifting. And then — Maine and Massachusetts put it to the voters and they voted ā€œyesā€ā€¦ Ultimately, we ended up with the right decision

It’s not a fully similar analogy, but I think this decision marks the changing attitudes in the same way. I’d bet dollars to donuts that if this appeared on state initiatives in the resisting states, we see the same result as in Maine. Even with the red states. 'Cause they all know that Medicaid helps pay Grandma’s nursing home – and that they may need that help themselves. And everyone knows someone who’s had cancer and needed to sell the farm (figuratively or literally) to pay for treatment.

Maybe this is the way we need to go: piece by piece, initiative by initiative, instead of this huge, vague, ominious ā€œACAā€ megalith.

I’d say Maine just chugged Medicaid, rather than choked on it

Seems to me some election transgressions, robocalls changing polling places, patently false cost projections, uneven distribution of election hardware, should fall under the RICO statutes.

I might hazard a guess there…just sayin.

Apparently Collins knows her constituents well. She put herself squarely in front of her voters. LaPage not so much.

WOW - with 92% reporting (537 of 584 precincts)

Answer - - Votes - - - - - Pct.
Yes - - - - - 198,293 - - - 59.1%
No - - - - - - 137,200 - - - 40.9%

so, it has been put to a vote & the people have spoken

  • now just waiting for LePage to rage & scream ā€œScrew the peopleā€

-don’t think for a second that LePage is not going to attempt to subvert the will of the people of Maine - he will seek to obstruct this in every way possible.

What a great result Maine’s CD-2 bought into Trumpism. This is a sign that universal health care has a strong foothold as a pretty white state voted almost 60% for this.
