Jefferson is supposed to have said something to the effect that, if he had to choose between no government and no press, he’d choose no government, because well-informed people can collectively make reasonable decisions.
But that was before Alex Jones and World Net Daily.

Yea, we’re pretty fucked.
Direct Democracy just doesn’t work. This can be seen very clearly in the results of initiatives in the western states such as California’s proposition 13. If voters are presented with a vote to lower their taxes they will go for it. Often on the same ballot there will be one initiative that increases the budget of the state(e.g. reduce classroom size) and another that reduces state revenue.
