The Supreme Court has repeatedly held that the qualification clauses for Senators and Representatives in the Constitution are exclusive and cannot be changed or added to by Congress or the states. This was definitively ruled in U.S. Term Limits, Inc. v. Thornton, 514 U.S. 779 (1995),
The people of Tennessee love that gasbag Corker, which doesn’t say much for the people of Tennessee. When are you people going to stop being red necks?
I really don’t expect the President to expend much energy protecting the American people. After all they are letting people with infectious diseases in through the borders. But don’t worry, that infectious respiratory infection floating around the kids is nothing to worry about. We have their word!
There was another hearing yesterday this one believe it or not on Benghazi and in order to attack Hillary the Repuks brought up a state department memo that was written before Hillary was in office. I guess Issa missed that one .
Y’know, I’ve been on board with TPM since the late 90s and it’s always been one of the first sites I check in the morning, and several times a day usually, but things have just gone to shit here. Useless stories like this sit on top for hours and hours. There’s very little going on outside the paywall these days, apparently. It’s sad.
Tearing into the teabagging Repubs for focusing on Obama and blaming him rather than whatever the real issue at hand is could be and should be a daily event.
What’s really awful is that these men, like that clown Corker, know that the political hay they are trying to make is being handled with secret ops that the principals cannot discuss. In essence, Corker and his political and media ilk are aiding terror in these attempts to revive their self-damaged party.
I wish more Senators would stand up to those jokers and tell them what is what. They think they can run roughshod over everyone and being mealy mouth won’t set them straight.
But the 17th amendment (approved April 8th, 1913) changed the way Senators are elected from being done in state legislatures to a vote by the people (voters) of the state concerned. Are you or are the Supremes holding that the 17th amendment is unConstitutional? Seems to me that what you quote abrogates Article 5 of the Constitution which lays out how amendments are to be made. There is nothing I have seen in the document that holds that qualifications to be a Senator or how one is elected are exclusive and cannot be changed. Should a Constitutional Convention be convened as described in the document then the entire thing could be up for grabs.
Clearly qualifications can be changed by amendment.
Sure hope Gordon Ball can beat Lamar. I am sick to death of these EvangeliBaggers masked as moderates lying to the citizens.
Billionaire Boy Bill Haslam is a crook, he is clueless as to how the VAST majority of the citizens in Tennessee live with the idiot work laws; now they’ve screwed W/C as well.
Corker is a teeny tiny imbecile. He was one of the SEDITIONISTS at the “Treason Party” on January 20, 2009.
Corker has shown me nothing to make me think he has the intelligence or the gravitas to lead an important committee in the U.S. Senate. He is a sniveling partisan, who is more interested in his appearance than the important business of the country. He knows no history of the country and cares not to learn it. Just attack the president, that’s what he does. The good Senator from California put him in his place, and rightfully so.
