Discussion: Bogus 'Election Integrity' Commission Wants States To Turn Over All Voter Data

Cutting out the middle man hackers so they can hand it straight to Putin instead.

Go fuck yourself, Kobach.

If someone doesn’t sue this bastard for this shit I’ll be highly upset. The fact that some GOP operative allowed close to 200 million people on the voter rolls to be exposed online and wide open for stealing for over two weeks, not long ago, should have been enough to wake this country up to how our personal information is being manipulated and given away freely without any question or scrutiny. And still tRump hasn’t done anything to protect voters from Russian interference in our next election. No way should Kobach be given a damn thing.

The RNC already has all this data. If the “Election Integrity Commission” can’t get a copy from the Republican Party offices, they can always ask the Russians, they have it too.

I think the feds should take over all voting issue, well as long as republicans are in charge of the feds, if not then states rights! So fucking predictable.

Perfect. And let’s store it all in one place and make it easy for the Russians.

So my auntie who died a few years ago is probably still on the voting rolls. I can attest to the fact that since she passed she never voted nor did anyone else vote in her name.
The rolls are cleaned up ever few years. What are they going to do about it? And why is inspector Javert Kobach interested in a system that works well in most localities?

I hope some of the State SOSs sned letters back that rain shit down on his head over his record of using “voter fraud” as an excuse to disenfranchise eligible voters.

So the man who was sanctioned for dishonesty by a federal court wants all voters’ personal data and voting histories, and promises that he and his subordinates will keep it safe. Gotcha.

Agreed, I live in Kansas and this is what he did—some type of proprietary software that he is peddling and in order to be accurate all states must participate in order to find those “double voters”. By the way, his record on prosecuting these sophisticated criminals have mostly caught clueless Republicans with homes in two states.

And once they have the data it can be leaked to the Russians in a ‘hack’. Or just left in an open directory on a public facing web server so that anybody they want can access it.

Uh-oh. He’s sending it all to Russia.

He wants to “fix” them.

For all other comments I post on TPM I’m a tourist or amateur, expressing an opinion or analysis. But for this stuff I’m a pro.

Data of this sort is easily manipulated to create false positives and generate headlines to support previous statements which could not otherwise be backed up by provable data. Set your reporting parameters the right way and you’ll get a list of hundreds of thousands of names people who you could claim voted in multiple jurisdictions for the same election. For example, they are asking for names, dates of birth, and last four digits of the social security number. (This last one is a tip-off, BTW, of potential data shenanigans.)

If you compare just on name and date of birth, you’ll automatically generate a huge number of overlaps for common names. Name and last four of SS# will similarly generate a huge number of overlaps because there are only 10,000 combinations, versus about roughly 25,000 potential dates of birth for voting-age adults. And if you loosen the parameters to allow for some states including data and others not, the number of overlaps and “potential” voting fraud data sets grows exponentially.

If you compared name and FULL SS# only, you’ll also come up with a lot of overlap for multiple registrations, and some will even show multiple votes in the same election due to nothing more than data entry error. But they didn’t ask for full SS#, even though for the federal government this is not a secret, so they must not WANT maximum accuracy, or they think they can’t secure the data, which tells you a lot about their reliability.

They will find many cases of people voting after they died, too. Why? Many older people vote absentee because they are sick. They send in their ballot in advance. Then they die before election day, but the precinct doesn’t know that so they count those handful of votes anyway. After the fact it can be spun as fraud by dishonest people like Kobach and Trump.

I would not trust anything coming out of this Commission since any data analyst worth their salary would know the effort is doomed to fail and it only for its PR value. They aren’t trying to clean up the data. They are trying to manufacture evidence to support their conclusion.

Thanks for this. Excellent points.

The Trump Organization will soon easily have all public voter information from all states. This is beyond disturbing. I sense a pogrom.

Are YOU a pure voter? Big Brother wants to know! And if you’re a commie Democrat- we know where you live.

Every day it gets worse. EPA now this.

Go to the Post Office and buy a stack of plain, pre-paid postcards at 38 cents each. Make a list of your House Rep’s and Senators’ addresses. The US Congress may not log all e-mails or phone calls (they probably keep a running talley) and phones are usually answered by volunteers or interns. A sealed letter can be held up while it is checked for anthrax or whatever but postcards sail right thru and they’ll have a handwritten hard copy of your opinions. At 38 cents you can send a lot of opinions they have to deal with.

Run for office- if Trump and Louie Gohmert can get elected what’s to stop a qualified candidate?

Become a Precinct Committee Officer, sometimes it’s a Ward officer. You’ll meet with neighborhood Dems and get out the vote. Find good citizens willing to run for office.

Register people to vote. If you need to help people overcome the GOP-led Voter run-around help them do that.

Run for School Board. Make sure Civics is being properly taught. Think a majority of America knows how government works? Just 26% of eligible voters in America voted for Trump and half of eligible voters stayed home last November. Today’s 12-year olds will be voting for President in 8 years.

Run for Mayor, City Council, County Commissioner, Borough Assembly.

Get appointed to your Planning Commission. Know everything going on in your community.

Run for State Legislature or Congress. The next census is in 2020, then we’ll redraw Congressional Districts. Get rid of GERRYMANDERING! Safe GOP seats gave us such intellectual giants as Louie Gohmert and Steve King. In most cases it’s the state Legislature that draws Congressional boundaries. Make it FAIR, OPEN and HONEST!

Overturn Citizens United. Money is NOT speech and Corporations are NOT people- at least not until Texas executes one.
Overturn any voter ID laws the are clearly an attempt to disenfranchise.
.

I’ll bet few states comply with this FEDERAL demand

On what basis would a secretary of state refuse to hand over publicly available data? FOIA would seem to require that they comply.

I agree it’s a disturbing letter (including the request) – but this is publicly available information. It can be obtained at any time by anyone.

There’s a request to list “other issues the Commission should consider”. I would fervently hope that “restrictions making it difficult for citizens to vote and/or register to vote” makes it onto that list.

Unlikely. I worked at our County Elections Office, they received death certificates direct from the County Recorder (where they are officially recorded) and removed voters from the poll book within 24 hours. Your county may not be as efficient, or may not be mandated by law to process records in this manner.
