Discussion: Boehner Faces Dissent Over Strategy To Punt Immigration Shutdown Fight

Discussion for article #230722

“stronger, sharper, harsher language that will put a historical mark on Barack Obama’s legacy.”

And there you have it. That’s what it’s ALL been about anyway for the past 6 years. They desperately want to be able to argue “remember what happened last time you elected one of THEM as POTUS?” They’ll then go down the checklist of idiotic talking points they manufactured with their obstructionism and radicalization, and with respect to immigration it will go something like “he tried so hard to flood the country with his fellow brown people by helping them invade us illegally that Congress had to censure him and it was all just a scam to get their fraudulent votes for Dems.” You basically can’t state an issue for which they haven’t been attempting all along to prospectively write the history books to say that he was a failure on that issue. It’s absurd. Steve King wants to rant about “not funding his lawlessness” but they’ve essentially taken the position that EVERYTHING he’s done has been “lawless,” which highlights that (a) they just want to defund the federal gov’t entirely anyway and (b) yep,you guessed it, they view some uppity black dude POTUSing as a lawless atrocity in and of itself.

So funding DHS on a CR means they have to put together something acceptable by March. From what the Republicans have shown so far, they can’t/won’t be able to do that. There’s going to be too much in-fighting and power grabs to make that plan work.

Earlier this year, we exceeded 400 ppm CO2. Last time that happened in a sustained way, ocean level was higher, a lot higher. Business as usual will not be business as usual for long. They think they have a mandate. Let’s move to higher ground, folks. The crisis is upon us.

I think this is a situation where Nancy Pelosi needs to tell Boehner that he’s on his own. For the good of the country,Pelosi and Dems have bailed Boehner out several times since he became Speaker. Conservatives say voters elected Repubs last month to block Pres. Obama, not to govern. Time to make Boehner and his crazy caucus to do one or the other and accept the consequences.

Yep. And any plan they come up with is subject to a Presidential veto.

Ok. Call their bluff. Stop funding DHS. See how that flies with the public.

Perhaps I’m missing something here, and if so, can anyone help me understand? If you defund DHS, doesn’t that do exactly what the President wants? No funds, mean no INS agents deporting “illegal” immigrants. With the same or fewer funds, DHS has to prioritize what it does and where the limited funding goes, so they just de-prioritize tracking down law abiding immigrants who don’t have the right documentation and focus on everything else.

(as a side note, I would be THRILLED if they defunded DHS, and the President simply said, OK, there is no more DHS and everything went back to a pre-2011 organizational structure)

There you go, trying to understand GOP logic. I warn you, that way lies madness.

I agree.

Actually, I think it is way past time for elected Democrats to point out, publically, loudly and often, that the right wing is constantly getting snookered by Boehner. Maybe getting punked by Boehner is a better way of putting it. It’s always tomorrow, next week, next month, when Boenher is going to REALLY show Obama. The lawsuit that was supposed to take the wind out of impeachment only just got filed and won’t be resolved until Obama’s term is over or nearly over to the point it won’t make any difference to his administration.

When will they learn. Wild eyed conservatives will never get their way. They are only used by the establishment and the leadership for their own purposes, and then told to calm down, we will do something about this SOON. Like really SOON! Like next century. OK, well maybe never.

It can’t be any other way, the “Hell No!” caucus speaks for maybe 20% of the country.

To let them have their way is to bring about disaster for the Republican Party.

Which is why the Democrats should be goading the fanatics at every turn to make Boehner PROVE IT, that he really hates Obama.

Could I please get a copy of “The Book of New Words”.
I want to know who wrote it. lol

Exactly. Call their bluff and defund the agency responsible for deporting “illegals” and “protecting the border”. The hilarity that would ensue would be worth it alone. Talk about the GOP blowing their own pecker off.

Will the book “1984” do? What the republicans are doing is “double plus ungood”.

If Obama vetoed the GOP idiocy on immigration and homeland security then the GOP would point fingers and say “SEE!!! WE TOLD YA’ALL HE WAS LAWLESS!!!” The better tactic I think woukd be to let the GOP defund Homeland Security. Then the dems could say that the GOP doesn’t care about the security of the country. In truth they don’t. That has been obvious for a long time.

Long story short: Boehner is telling Republicans to stand down.

It’s all over except the shouting. Obama will win this.
