OK, this may be going way out on the conspiracy branch, but an NPR interview with a PTC engineer suggested that the frequencies used by Amtrak are not protected or even out of range by off-the-shelf transmitters. Is it possible someone intentionally or unintentionally interfered with the signal, despite the engineer’s best efforts to brake?
What signal? Are the brakes run by wireless transmitter? That would seem odd, to say the least. Surely it wouldn’t take a signal to see that the train was inappropriately accelerating?
