Discussion: Bloomingdale's Apologizes For Date Rape-y Holiday Ad

Hire sex workers to spank and put diapers on you when you wife is not looking? Santa Claus knows who has been naughty and nice, Blomingdale’s.

@zoester

But imagine the outrage if it had said “. . . when she’s not looking” which would be a justification for going ballistic. This a lame attempt at edgy.

where is that depicted in the ad?

Look up the verb form of “spike”

He’s clearly also thinking about wishing someone “Happy Holidays”. Maybe that will raise the dander of everyone else not already offended by the rape-y implications.

Got to agree if for no other reason than rarely is a woman a man’s best friend, save for wives and long-term girlfriends and if you are needing to spike their drinks to “get some,” it’s time to move on.

Perhaps poorly done and not likely to be seen as a “green light” for frustrated boys and men. The ad is clearly suggesting you dope your best bro so you can put the moves on his squeeze, which is another form of douchery all together.

Seconded! And well said.

And who’s Bloomingdales? Aren’t they that store featured on “Miracle on 34th Street?”

Yeah, it is a “lame” attempt. They couldn’t use “when she’s not looking” so they came off the edge and went generic. No, “generic” doesn’t work either. Can’t figure it out. Now if she was talking to two guy friends, leaning against one and having her arm on the shoulder of guy friend two and we added a third guy friend who was spiking her drink then we’d have lots to talk about.

They would call it Bloomingdale’s edgy. And that’s Ok.

Even if one removes all thought of a rape context, it still portrays what would be an incredibly irresponsible thing to do as just good, clean fun. Causing another person to ingest alcohol without his/her knowledge is appallingly dangerous.

Hey, Bloomie’s…how’s that datey-rapey ad workin’ fer ya?

People are talking about it. Mission accomplished.

“Bloomingdale’s thanks you all so much for your feedback, without which we wouldn’t have known that the obviously inappropriate ad was inappropriate.”

Bloomingdale’s was a big part of my life growing up in NY. My late mother worked there for a million years, I worked there several Christmas seasons, and my better half still wears the Omega watch I bought there for him in 1969 as an engagement present. So I have to give them a pass for this momentary lapse, if it’s even that, because of that and also for their Big Brown Bags which we touched on a few forums ago…

Okay, people, you are totally mis-reading this.

See that guy on the right? He really wants to talk to that woman, but just can’t get the courage to do it. She’s flitting around, the life of the party. He thinks, “she’s way out of my league”. Over to his right (not pictured) is a glass of egg nog, his egg nog. And you, dear reader, are his friend who just happens to be holding a bottle of vodka. See? The ad is telling you, the friend of the attractive-but-somehow-not-self-confident man to just add a little “social lubricant” to his egg nog while he’s staring at the woman he obviously will never otherwise get up the courage to talk with.

Simple, see? Now aren’t you ashamed of yourselves for thinking that guy on the right was a drug-slipping date rapist in waiting?

If you have to go into that level of explanation, clearly the ad sucks. Regardless of what the ad agency WANTED it to say, in light of the COSBY allegations it is extremely insensitive and weird.

In the business, that’s known as a “Hot Cosby.”

I might have to take the anti-PC side in this story (or non-story.) Spiking someone’s eggnog does not automatically mean you intend to rape them. I am not an expert on date-rapes, but the target is usually not someone who is a friend. Keep this up and you will alienate most people from your social causes.

  1. Poor taste, major misstep on their part

  2. I really hate the word ‘rape-y’

um, that’s what makes it “date-rapey” and not plain “rapey” – date rape by definition involves a friend or acquaintance that you are wanting to have sex with, whether they want it or not.

I don’t think that woman has much to fear from that man in the sexual intercourse department.
