Discussion for article #236945
Well thatâs productive.
Exsctly
Pretty stupid thing to do. None of the GOPâer candidates give a rats ass about Black Lives including the Black GOPâer candidates. But if they work hard at killing the Democrats perhaps they can enjoy a President Cruz or Huckabee.
From a 2013 article in the Baltimore Sun:
¨About 50,000 people were arrested last year in Baltimore, compared with 100,000 in 2005 under OâMalley.
So far this year, only about 500 people have been arrested without charges, compared with more than 20,000 in 2005.¨
Apparently, OâMalley was big on rounding up young black males, so the criticism has some basis in fact. To keep the 100K arrests in context, there are only 600K residents of Baltimore.
Ask Snopes. And do so before you peddle the rumor.
OâMalley is DOA as a candidate. You can see from his history that he is not going to get the black vote. Nor given that history, is he a viable selection for VP.
If he keeps running, he makes it more likely that we get a Republican President.
Why is Her Majesty Hillary such a weak candidate she has to have an uncontested primary in order to win?
I donât think youâll find too many people who think OâMalley is any threat to her candidacy. Dudeâs delusional. Sanders already has the left flank staked out, and thereâs no future in moving to HRCâs right. Bernie may be a more formidable opponent than most think, but the pundits are going to be surprised at the breadth and depth of Clintonâs support among rank-and-file Dems when the campaign moves into high gear early next year.
Not true. Itâs good to have a debate on the issues. He may never get the black vote but then he wonât be the party;s nominee either so itâs good to hear from other candidates. We donât need a coronation
And here we go. The âliberal mediaâ will torch anything OâMalley has to say, and the âprogressivesâ in the party will be happy to feast on the raw flesh. This is what Dems do to each other. Oh hey Black folk in Baltimoreâtry Ben Carson, or Jeb Bush, and see how things go. I am getting too old for this.
Carlos, do you live in or near Baltimore? If not, then your stats are BS. B-more has a horrific drug and crime culture. Thatâs a fucking fact. And it involves too many young black men. So, what do you do about it? Have any ideas? Iâm sorry, but I live nearby and I had no problem with B-more police going after real crime. Drugs were turning neighborhoods into war zones. If the cops got out of control, yeah, thatâs a problem. But slamming OâMalley is pretty weak tea. And your perspective is far too simplistic. Life sucks in the inner city. Nothing is easy.
Anybody believing in coronations after 2008 needs their head examined. I just prefer that candidates seeking the nomination have a prayer. OâMalley doesnât.

There you go.
Pretty good idea not to do this: 20,000 arrests without charges in 2005 under OâMalley.
Doubt that that practice improves âthe cultureâ any.
And why do you believe the validity of stats depends on the locality of the person who present them?
He got the black vote when he ran for Mayor in a black majority city. He knows how to play the game and heâll do what he needs to do.
1.I was quoting an article from the Baltimore Sun. And besides, the opinion that matters is not mine, but the residents who apparently resented the heavy-handed policing promoted by OâMalley when he was mayor.
2. I have lived the past 30 years in and around Chicago, which presumably has about the same mix of problems as Baltimore. Heavy handed cop craft does not work here, and I imagine that the same is true in Baltimore.
Yeah, that 20000 arrests w/o charges is the real crime. No wonder Baltimorians donât trust cops.
There is definitely some truth to criticizing OâMalley as being part of the problem, but there were extenuating circumstances. We also know who the real problem is, Republican party and its bigoted âtough on crimeâ Southern strategy campaigning.
Iâm not defending Bill Clinton or Democrat sellouts but most Democrats had no choice but to compromise. Would it have been preferable to have lost 1992 and have even more Republican justices on SCOTUS.
At least, Clinton and OâMalley realize the error of their ways and want to fix things. Republicans just want more of the same blame the victim.
Truer words could not be spoken.
Canât there be a happy medium? Communities still want to be treated with some fairness and a touch of respect, even from those sworn to protect us. We shouldnât be in fear of our lives on all fronts, a) from the criminals and b) also from those we pay to protect us from criminals.
If so, whatâs the point of having police? We obviously need the police, but we need unbiased cops who do their jobs fairly, not the bullies hellbent on becoming an invading force upon the citizenry they work for.
