Amen. Long overdue.
This is a needed discussion, but not at the expense of party unity.
Absolutely. As a white guy, I say, let the Repubs be the party of anxious white people (especially white men) who can’t handle the loss of their long-held privilege. I want to be a member of a political party that looks like America. And I fully welcome a new, diverse generation of party leadership!
(And I’m not dissing such elder statesmen and women as John Lewis, Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer, and others)
I agree wholeheartedly!
If this old white democrat had a voice he would say that seniority is the biggest problem. Even if someone gets elected it takes years to get a voice in Congress. It is always good to let them hear you but there is no blue wave until November.
Honestly, I believe the best way to fix the double standard in our judicial system and in society in general is to elect more black people, and especially black women, to elected office. They have earned that right through hard work and dedication to the cause. And we don’t want to be like Republicans who give lip service to their base in their campaigns, then vote consistently for the elites once in office.
This! For the good of the nation, this!
It shouldn’t be a mutually exclusive conversation. That said, when has there been party unity? During Obama’s 2012 run, the party was behind him, but there were plenty of times when only a handful of Dems stepped up to defend him from Republican outrage fantasies about FEMA Camps, Birtherism and racism.
I think the party does owe it’s most loyal voting base and rising new stars an audience beyond CBC gatherings. The demographics are changing and it seems these women have cracked the code on creating and energizing their base.
It sounds good, but let’s win first.
There needs to be a new “Yes We Can” Caucus is the next Congress. Many incumbents feel it’s their job to school Dem candidates on the things they can’t speak up on because reasons. The CBC endorsed old white guys over young black women because the newbies were just too too. Now that it’s clear that a significant number of blue districts are trending VERY blue, these new Reps should refuse to buy into the incrementalism that cripples the national party.
Yes you are! We cannot keep existing without you. Please - step forward and let’s see real leadership because I know y’all are all about that and it is time.
Hell yes.
They expressed frustration that the party is tilted against rising politicians — especially those of color — and argued that if Democrats flip the House in November, it would be the result of organization and turnout amount black voters, particularly women.
If that happens, the candidates said, gratitude won’t be enough. They want a seat at the leadership table and a role in re-examining how the party works.
All for them being able to rise up through the ranks. I assume they don’t expect to get committee chairs over long serving members, but I certainly want them to have a prominent role.(ETA - And, of course, to get committee chairs when the time comes). My only concern is that some of it reminds me a little of the BLM meeting where someone in the group said, “No one is listening to us,” and Obama had to point out that they were meeting with the POTUS in the Oval Office.
This is a conversation that should be had. After Democrats take back at least the House. For the next 7 weeks, ALL energy should be devoted to that.
Hate to bring it up, but African-Americans are about 10 percent of the US population–I think a tiny bit less. And that percentage is not growing. So, while the black vote is vital in many areas, to be part of a governing coalition, black politicians, and black citizens, need strong alliances with other people of color, and with white voters, too.
O I agree. But African Americans have also been kept back from leadership positions and largely ignored in the past. Over and above that, it depends on geography. African American voters turn out in the south and we win - we won in Alabama because they turned out.
Good point.
Hate to bring it up, but without black women we’d have pedophile roy moore in the US Senate. Black women voted for HRC at a higher clip than ANY OTHER GROUP. They are the backbone of the Democratic party and the time for taking a backseat to white men has passed. It’s time the Democrats have a leadership that’s representative of those who put in the most work for the party. Old guard needs pasture.
I’m not motivated to be unified with anyone who has a problem with the concept.
Liked x infinity.
I don’t know how much more clear this could be.
God knows they know how to fight oppression. Even legal oppression and we can use all of that fight we can get ahold of.
