Sorry, but from the story, at least, there’s no indication that religion played any part in this. While it’s true that religion has been used often as a cover for hate, it’s also true that not all haters cloak themselves in religion. I think you’re expressing your own feelings about religion here, not reacting to this story.
True, not directly. However, indirectly, the intolerance instilled in so many by their (major) religion of choice has had big ripple effects for many decades (and centuries). That religion-based intolerance has permeated our society and has many tangled webs all throughout. So, though, it may be not have a direct line here, I’d be willing to bet my next meal it plays an indirect role.
ETA: My feelings really are directed at the ultra-religionists, the right-wing, fundamentalist style of religion – not the ones who practice the basic tenets of love, peace, tolerance, etc.
