And no Russians required…
Shit with the the flooding in NC are those places even there?
I think emergency arrangements are going to have to be made.
Hopefully/Cooper will stay strong
Who could have known?
No Really….WHO?
No need for Russians with today’s GOP
This reduces rural people’s ability to vote - isn’t that exactly who they want to get to the polls?
“North Carolina’s 2018 midterm election will have nearly 20 percent fewer early voting locations than there were in 2014.”
A feature, not a bug.
After losing a couple of times re:gerrymandering this is about the only way they can retain control. I also would expect that the hours will be reduced, not just the number of locations. There will also be a drive to encourage employers to not allow staff to leave work early so that they can vote. Anyway to reduce the number of possible votes.
“I do not see it as an isolated event, but rather a part of a larger voter suppression effort,” said Al Daniels, a Democratic member of the Bladen County Board of Elections, of the uniform-hours law. “I see it as anti-voter, period.”
In 2013, the GOP-led General Assembly passed far-reaching legislation in the name of combating voter fraud that cut back on early voting, established a photo ID requirement and did away with pre-registration of high school students, same-day registration and out-of-precinct voting. A federal appeals court struck down the law, labeling it an unconstitutional attempt to “target African Americans with almost surgical precision.”
Who could have known?
No Really…WHO?
“Wealthier, more populous counties appear to be doing better at weathering the changes. Still, election officials acknowledged that the law may adversely affect their rural counterparts.”
Hmmm. Poor rural areas not doing so well and voting may be down? Aren’t these Trump people getting hurt? Will they ever learn?
Or is this a feature, not a bug, given that the state elected a Democrat for a Governor and when voting is down the Rs tend to win more?
I’d go with the latter.
At least No Carolina is on the cutting edge of something.
In 2017, 31 states put forth 99 different laws, rules and proposals designed to limit and suppress voting. In 2016, the winner by 3 million votes of the presidential election was declared the loser. In a few short years, 1/3 of the country will have 2/3 of the representation in the Senate, and 2/3 of the country will be represented by 1/3 of the Senate. Thanks to gerrymandering, we have to outperform the Republicans in voting by +7 to break even.
This is not a representative democracy, folks. This is Republican hegemony posing as democracy, and they are getting so full of themselves they are not even bothering to try to disguise it anymore.
Republican state lawmakers championed the law? Well, that’s all we needed to know to be sure that the law had nothing to do with actually making it easier to vote earlier. This is especially true of Repblican state lawmakers in NC, who all seem to be insane.
Except in NC, the rural population is largely poor and black.
the Supreme Court decision in Shelby County v. Holder
Republican state lawmakers, who championed the new law, argue that the consistency it provides [by requiring early voting locations in all counties to have the same hours] will eliminate uncertainty among voters
That doesn’t even make sense. People don’t vote in multiple counties, so consistency across counties means nothing. All I need to know is where and when I can vote early in MY county.
NC GOP’s response to Pro Publica’s research: Success!!!
