If the police department isn’t willing to obey the Mayor duly elected by the people to run their city, it sounds like it is the police department that needs to see either some resignations or firings, not the Mayor’s office.

“The talk” is nothing new. This is a quote from a research paper published in 2004:
One parent suggested that these strategies would “soften the blow” of future negative encounters. A parent stated, “I’m on guard, I’m on guard all of the time… just dealing with the reality of the world in which my child exists in… it is a challenge, you know, just being black, …and then you’re trying to raise your child into this society.” She continued, “I question whether or not any other group has to tell their children how to behave when they go down the street… and if you are stopped what it is that you need to do, what it is that you need to say …I have to set a foundation for when [she] becomes a teenager and young adult …I have to start the preparation now.”
To deny that parents of African America children have “the talk” with their kids is to deny reality. Lynch, O’Reilly, I’m looking at both of you.

It’s just a question of who is in control – the elected officials or the police. When the police are in control, there’s a special term for that.
Maybe de Blasio should take a page out of Saint Ronnie’s book and just fire them all and tell the union to go fry an oyster.

1 / I had “that conversation” with my son, and we’re white as snow, living in AZ. By and large one should interact with police very very carefully. Be polite, but know that they lie and have guns, batons, and tasers.

Please note how he didn’t call for resignations of the St. Louis DA who presented a known liar to the Grand Jury, or the FOX Affiliate’s sound editor/producer, or anybody within the FOX empire for illegally bugging people in England, ad nauseum. We tell our children that very thing, and we are white, educated, middle-class parents of white children living in a predominantly white area. I can’t imagine the stress and worry of families of color in protecting their children in today’s dysfunctional “post-racial” culture (-- thank you Justice Roberts). Intelligent people warn their kids about real dangers they might face.

Seriously. While I would be the first to say that it’s of special importance to minority parents to get the message across to their kids, it’s still important for even white parents BECAUSE THAT’S JUST THE REALITY OF HOW THE POLICE BEHAVE. I saw my share of police roughing up friends and getting physical when breaking up college parties, etc. They just think they can. It’s that simple. The second they get “backtalk” they fly into a rage and I’ve even been present for the nonsensical insertion of “you’re resisting arrest” when someone was just telling the cop to get lost and they’d send everyone home and stop the party. If they’re looking for an authoritarian fix, they can manufacture one in a heart beat…and they do it ALL THE TIME.
