It’s as if the Clintons asked themselves, “What is the smallest thing we can promise to make this go away?”. I’d be a lot happier if Bill and Chelsea left NOW, before the election rather than make promises for after all the votes are cast, taking this ethical conflict into consideration.
Certainly if Hillary does not win, they can return; if she’s not President, why would anyone care? Now is not the time for halfway measures.

It would matter because a) it would be seen as a victory to those who made the foundation into an issue and b) if they were to leave, it would give trolls to a new reason to be more intrusive.
