Joe, just shut up already.
What the hell does “voluntary” busing even mean?
“But, you know, we all know that 30 seconds to 60 seconds on a campaign debate exchange can’t do justice to a lifetime committed to civil rights."
True. 10 candidates and the debate format certainly doesn’t allow for it. He and his team will have to be better prepared for that in the next debate.
It feels to me like a very politician-y way of avoiding telling the real truth. You’ve got this letter to Eastland saying, “I want you to know that I very much appreciate your help during this week’s Committee meeting in attempting to bring my anti-busing legislation to a vote.” That reads pretty damning to me.
One way or another, might as well get this issue resolved. Bigger fish to fry, and all that…
Nobody had a problem with “voluntary” busing, neither then nor now, it was the mandated busing forcing schools to de-segregate that got the whites upset.
Reasonable start to reading up on it if you’re not familiar with voluntary vs. forced busing (forced was where they assigned kids to different schools, voluntary is pretty self-explanatory that you’re choosing to go to a different school than the one in your neighborhood).
Totally OT, but in that photo, Bernie looks like he hasn’t shit in three days.
Before anyone jumps on me for saying that, I’m uncomfortably familiar with that event. It’s a truly terrible look for him though.
Using the Bedingfield AC360 interview as a reference, Biden’s team fatally assumed that last night was going to be a great Biden win.
He’s distinguishing between localities that integrated their schools somewhat willingly and those that required the federal government, including the courts, to come in and do it for them.
Biden’s all wet on this but in my opinion his critics are also missing the boat. The real issue is not that Biden was on a friendly basis with racists like Eastland and Talmadge. The real issue is WHY, He was friendly with them because he stuck a knife into busing to achieve racial balance in education, eviscerating Brown v. Board of Ed. But since no one wants to admit that such an evisceration took place, Biden and others get a pass.
Biden claims that he opposed relining by banks.
Given his rather intimate relationship with banks and credit card companies (he was know as the Senator from MBNA) I’m skeptical. Does anyone have more information on Biden’s record when it comes to discriminatory banking/credit policies?
Look, if we gave Biden and Harris more time to explore Biden’s civil rights record in a more nuanced way, we wouldn’t have time to watch Eric Swalwell stumble his way through a passing-the-torch story. And we need to keep our eye on the ball here – the DNC has its priorities.
It seems that if the nominee is not Biden, then we might have to sacrifice those Trump voters who are unhappy with him (Trump) and could have possibly been swayed. To that, I say, bye-bye. Joe is not worth alienating young voters and progressives.
It wasn’t the look that got my attention, but the way he’s starting to slur his words in that clip.
Maybe just a normal result of aging, or dental problems, but he’s not speaking as clearly as he did a few years ago. And I don’t think it’s off-limits to point out this kind of thing.
I’m just going to take my cues from Obama, who seems a pretty good judge of character.
Doubt he’d be close friends with and have kept around a VP for 8 years who was a closet racist.
“Some of his best friends are black!”
It’s the reason he supports Metamucil For All.
