Discussion: Biden: Sanders Will Need To Be 'More Aggressive' In Reining In Supporters

I believe the expression is called “whistling past the graveyard”

I hope I’m wrong, but there is trouble in River City and no one wants to look over and take it seriously. He is fomenting anger and hatred not towards Trump and the GOP, but towards Hillary and the Democratic party, doing it from the inside, convincing a generation of young voters who could find a happy welcoming home in the Democratic party that it’s a big scam. If you ask me, that’s worse than Nader. I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think this is going to end well.

Adult stuff, Steve. You are so right.

I would hope so, seems to have a delusion or more re his chances, even if he takes the majority of votes in CA he still loses as HRCs share will take her over the top. Mr Sanders best outcome, IMO, is to at once shore up his support of the eventual nominee and to urge his supporters to back the nominee. Doing so will guarantee him a committee chair in the next Senate where he could continue to exert influence. Lacking those moves he becomes irrelevant and may just find he has destroyed his legacy while ensuring a Dumpster win. I know for me, as a decade long follower, he has already made me wonder just what I saw in him that attracted me in the first place.

Hillary will cross the majority of pledged delegates and the 2383 total delegate threshold to win the nomination on June 7th. Bernie will be out of objective rationales to stay in. His supporters will start abandoning him then. Whether Bernie falls in line or remains a low grade fever is up to him.

I think you are absolutely right. Your conclusion is becoming inescapable.

I think the next step will be for Obama surrogates to talking in a nice way about Bernie’s declining faculties, while emphasizing that he means well. The next step after that will be less nice.

It’s past time for Hillary’s team and Dem ‘establishment’ figures to just ignore Sanders and his campaign. Barring a complete flip of nearly all the Supers Hillary will glide to the nomination even if she wins no more primaries. She, and Dem leanings PACs, are already turning their fire on Trump, there’s nothing to be gained by engaging Sanders or his followers. We’ll need the support of his followers and at this moment anything said to or about them will come to no good. In short, shut up and get on with the campaign against Trump, time and math will finish Sanders.

Umm they been ignoring since sc. I think that is part of why he’s so angry.

Agreed. Coddling has seemed to only make him grow angrier. And the more ridiculous and outrageous Sanders’ supporters become the more defiant he becomes. It’s becoming a feedback loop. The focus, as a result, needs to be on uplifting HRC, talking about their vast similarities on issues, and the danger to the country and planet if Trump is allowed to win. I’m no fan of shame, but in this case I believe it’s the best course of action.

I looked at this last night, and it was disgusting to think that a candidate who’s only lately become a Democrat could morph into a traitor to the party so easily. He’ll keep stirring the pot, his angry delusional followers will almost surely do violence at the PHL convention, trump will use Sanders’ accusations against Clinton and for what? His followers are truly the dreamers thinking they can bring a socialist revolution to this country where nobody wants to pay the amount of taxes necessary to fulfill their utopian dreams.

I get the distinct impression he and his most rabid supporters are definitely angry with those who didn’t vote for him. Whether it’s here or on social media, much of the anger from his supporters is aimed at punishing HRC and her voters. There’s a whole lot of “hahahaha Shillary is going to lose, get used to President Trump, suckers” as if they’ll somehow be able to live in the United States of Bernie while the rest of us perish.

They remind me of the End Timers. That’s the attitude they always have - hahaha we’re going to sit in heaven after we’re raptured and watch the rest of you get what you deserve.

This, right here people.

Biden just said “Bernie means well, even though he’s already lost. Just let him play out his little fantasy for another 3 weeks. Bless his little heart.”

“Don’t worry. We got this.”

I personally wasn’t expecting the Whitehouse to get involved this week. I expected them to wait and see if there was a repeat of something similar. The fact that they jumped into it at all … and with Biden softselling it instead of Obama … Yeah. The Whitehouse is pretty fucking pissed and Bernie & his bernouts just got put on notice.

I feel a hell of a lot better now. Thank you Joe. Thank you Obama.

I wish the Democratic Party had refused Sander’s request to run as a Democrat. I really believe someone thought he could bring something to the table. We know it has not worked out that way and now and I speak for myself - I am tired of this and am angry. Bernie Sanders doesn’t care about a legacy. He doesn’t care about the country as a whole. He only cares about Bernie. I am tired of the conspiracy theories coming from the Sanders campaign - and they are coming from the top ala Jeff Weaver.
I made a resolution last evening that I would no longer engage any Bernie supporter online (such as here on TPM) and ignore their lies. Long gone is the promise of a civil conversation.
I will continue to support HRC and down ticket candidates in any way I can by canvassing, fund raisers, phone banking, etc but any conversation here with Sanders’ supporters is a useless endeavor. There is nothing left to say (and there is no need for another 'debate" but that is up to HRC and her advisors) . I have faith in Robby Mook and I have faith in HRC.
In my state of Missouri we have the possibility of taking Roy Blunt’s seat in the senate and replacing him with our Secretary of State, a young, intelligent candidate - Jason Kander. I hope to be more engaged with his campaign as well as our local chapter of Planned Parenthood
It is imperative we HRC supporters do all we can to help and support those people and organizations who are fighting FOR something and not whining and crying that life has cheated them out of something they deserve.

If Sanders were capable and willing to guide his supporters he would, Daddy talks from Biden or from the whole Party that he’s on the ticket of aren’t going to make a difference.
He already knows but chooses to allow it because the anger is all that he’s got going for him. His policy proposals fell flat, his personality is more old fart than Presidential and youthful and he has no other real friends at the top. Riling up the masses makes him seem like he has a following but it’s a following of the crazed and while loud and obnoxious, ala teabaggers, they only do damage over time.
Bernie-baggers are not going to rule the nation either but they will be pissed and keep hurting instead of helping because, childish butthurt brats. Here we go again.

“That’s not Bernie,” Biden told reporters”

Sorry, it is Bernie.

She already is and has been for a while now. The various responses have only been what’s necessary, and usually from surrogates and supporters.

Bernie is marching in front of the remnants of his parade out in the wilderness. He just hasn’t figured it out yet. His hard core supporters certainly haven’t.

I think they know and that’s why they are so mad. They still really believe Bernie was robbed of the nomination. And Bernie isn’t looking to calm things down, his campaign is now on record that they want to literally harm Hillary’s chances in the general. If they can’t have the house they are by god going to burn it down.
