Discussion: Biden Refutes Politico's Spin On Dowd Column About Son's 2016 Wish

Discussion for article #241466

“The bottom line on the Politico story is that it is categorically false…”

Said the Biden campaign. And almost everyone else who has ever read a Politico story.

The story was characterized in the most damaging way possible. So what if Biden spoke with Dowd? Would his speaking of his son’s wish and his desire to fulfill it be so terrible? Why must everything be turned into poison? There was no purpose for this story except to smear Biden. And on who’s behalf? They imply the Clinton campaign would stand to benefit – but I don’t think it would serve them to attack Biden in this way. No – Politico functioned as a propaganda arm of the GOP in this case to make sure any viable democrats are damaged goods.

What about Maureen Dowd’s claim? I saw Karen Tumulty of the Washington Post on Andrea Mitchell’s show today claiming “they” (members of the press) believed Biden had actually discussed this with Dowd. Someone is lying

Two MAJOR problems with the sourcing of this “story”.

Politico.
Maureen Dowd.

'nuf said. It’s birdcage liner. Nothing to see here, referee says play through. If or when Uncle Joe decides to make an announcement - whatever that announcement is - why on earth would he make it to MoDo of all people? I mean, you ask us to suspend a lot of belief in the name of “journalism” these days, but come on. That would be akin to him calling up Limbaugh and giving him the exclusive scoop.

Swing and a big miss. You know when I’ll believe something VP Joe said about this? When I see Joe in front of a camera saying it.

I’ve said from the very beginning, who it would benefit the most from a late entry into the Dem race of VP Biden the most, is every damn one of the GOP candidates in their field. Because every one of them is losing to HRC in polls.

Been saying that for a couple of months now. And we all know both Politico and MoDo to be very handy and very reliable mouthpieces for the GOP agenda.

Yes, because gawd forbid they are found to be wrong!

There’s no way to see this as anything but a trial balloon. I assumed back when the Times published Dowd’s scribblings that Joe Biden had told her the story, and that he expected she’d print it (why else talk to her?) – so how could that have been anything but a trial balloon?

As far as is known there were no other people in the room, just the vice president and his son. Beau was dying, Joe was of sound mind and body, and Dowd ran a story describing Beau’s last few words. Somebody gave it to her, and if it wasn’t a trial balloon, it was an awful exploitation of the younger Biden.

Because she is influential and widely read, like it or not. I read it on the day it ran and there was no escaping the suspicion that Mr. Biden leaked it for purposes of a trial balloon. And I don’t say that to be judgmental if in fact it’s what he did. But it was a way to test the waters without committing, and some people took the hint and formed committees to urge him to run. They are behind whatever push there may be

Agreed. First of all it’s not at all far fetched to think Beau would make a dying request for his dad to run for President. In fact it’s more far fetched to think he would not say that. At that point, using a true event as a trial balloon is fine.

Why would VP Biden talk to Maureen Dowd anyway. He had to know that she is the most rabid anti Hillary person writing for the NY Times. I also never believed that VP Biden’s son said run because of Hillary and Bill Clinton. I think that was something Maureen Dowd made up. I think the last thing on Beau Biden’s mind when he was dying was the Clintons. Not to be melodramatic, but I don’t think that Beau Biden while he was dying made his dad promise to run for POTUS. If Beau Biden said that to his dad and I am sure it was true it wasn’t at his deathbed. It was probably sometime when he was more lucid and was of sound mind days before he died. I am sure what was on Beau’s mind if he was at all lucid, because at the end they give you a lot of drugs, was saying good-bye to his loved ones or his loved ones saying good-bye to him.

I don’t think Dowd has ever had a nice word about the Clintons. Karen Tumulty is not in the position to speak truthfully- or nicely- about Hillary because it’s not in her job description at the WAPO

Yeah, right, and Bernie Nader really is going to make good on his promise not to run as an independent if he doesn’t get the nomination.

She is an overpaid sow who probably thinks her scribbling career is too big to fail at this point.

So you believe all of the negative inferences about Biden made by the Politico story, but not the central factual claim - i.e., multiple people said that Biden told them the same thing - that laid the foundation for the Politico story?

Interesting.

damn, kornacki did a bit of a hit piece on biden. he did the plagiarism scandal, showing extended clips and then spending considerable time going into the weeds about what happened. and then brought it up to date with today’s developments. he also highlighted modo’s role in both episodes. but very surprised at the tone.

I watched it. This is Kornacki’s delivery style. He treats everyone the same.

The cable media seems to run everything through the loony rightwing clown filter instead of any rational judgment before assigning news value these days. Why they could have just as easily pushed the imaginary ‘news’ envelope further and said, ‘Biden’s Secret Ploy for an Earth Orbit Inauguration’ couldn’t they, long before MoDo finds shag carpeting or Earth tones lurking near her bag of cannabis cookies?
