Discussion: Biden Predicts A Hasty Winnowing Of The Democratic Field Next Year

And he’ll be among the first to drop. Great prediction, Joe!

The little “article” has zero content that matches the title. What is up with that?

From the Politico article:

"Noting the 15 percent threshold for Democratic candidates in Iowa, the first-in-the-nation caucus state, and California, which will award its delegates in early March, Biden said, “It’s going to work its way through relatively quickly for all of us.”

I think they miss their AP content and occasionally spam the article board with pablum to fill the void.

That’s a given, there’s a handful now that won’t even make it past the June debate…if they actually even qualify for the debate

The use of “hasty” in the headline is a little strange: As you noted, Biden was simply commenting on the calendar.

Aside from that, the Politico article also says that Biden reiterated his pledge not to criticize the other Democratic candidates.

They should all follow Liz on Impeachment. If Trump is still loose (from jail or the nuthouse) he is not going to allow Biden (or anyone else) to run in an election remotely honest,

We have a number of good candidates. I think it would be nice if TPM did a compare and contrast of candidates based on positions. Where does Biden stand on healthcare? What about taxes? Without name calling I would like to know if he really is a corporate stooge like the Bernie supporters say? Same treatment for all the rest including Bernie.

Good catch.

I like Joe but I want more than a one term Democratic President. If I’ve done my calculations correctly, Joe would be 86 by the time he finished his second term. That’s frankly unacceptable in my mind, and no I’m not an ageist, just being practical. Also, I think Joe is currently being propped up by a lot of never-tRumpers and other unaffiliated Republicans that realize he would be only good for one term. They also see him as a moderate that has in days yore worked with Republicans…but the Republicans left in Congress are most certainly not the Republicans of even a few years ago…and no one should give them an opportunity to rehabilitate themselves back into the mainstream after they’ve screwed the country and blindly supported the criminal currently in the White House. I want those assholes gone or at best diminished in our politics where they can no longer screw over the country.

Like I said, Joe Biden is a decent and honorable candidate but so far I think he’s getting a free ride by the right of center media and yet he hasn’t offered one thing in terms of direction for the country that many other candidates are already regularly doing to some degree.

The sooner he gets out the better

Biden is currently being treated like the presumptive Democratic frontrunner by the media based on weak early polling, an Obama legacy candidate and name ID. Not on anything he proposes for America’s future except that he’s “safe” including by most Never-tRumpers.

I wonder, is it going to narrow down to one from the ‘moderate’ wing and one from the ‘progressive wing’, e.g., Biden v Bernie, Klobuchar v Harris.

Or is it going to be Biden vs multiple progressives who split the prog vote? Say, Biden v Harris, Warren, Booker.

The first line says that he thinks the field will decrease next year.

I agree with you. Biden seems to be a safe space for a lot of people who are uncomfortable thinking the whole thing through.

In addition it would be nice for TPM to state whether their stated position is supported or negated by their actions. Give a clear distinction between what they say and what they have done. Judging Biden solely by what he has done, he looks to be bit to the right of Hillary, not a position agreeable to the Democratic Party base.

Really, I am not sure I agree with this. In a normal year, yes, but 2020 is not normal. All of the top and middle tier candidates are vastly better than Trump. I want to know who can win, who will run a strong campaign, who is scandal free. Good policy is great, but at least 3/4 of Warren, Harris, Booker, Gillibrand will still be in the Senate, hopefully writing and passing bills for whoever is elected to sign.

Nah, he’s being propped up largely by POC and we aren’t going anywhere.

I’ve thought it through every which way possible and Biden is the candidate I’m supporting.
