Discussion: Biden: 'Not Sure' 2020 Presidential Run Is 'The Appropriate Thing For Me To Do'

Toss out the old simply because they’re old and not because of scandal or ineptitude, and bring in who exactly, someone to please millennials who want someone closer their age, that demographic which has a terrible record on turning out to vote? But here’s the deal with Pelosi. She is a prodigious fund raiser because affluent San Franciscans are her base, she then funnels that dough to her Democratic caucus in their various races. Find the someone who can do that and then we’ll talk again.

Just tossing names out which might not occur to anyone. Adam Schiff, Xavier Becerra, current California AG, and the new rising star in the party, Kamala Harris. Not saying they’d go after it, but to pound on incumbents of a certain age is beginning to get tiresome.

of all the b.s. lines: “you hold the pen and the Lord will write the sentence.” - faugh

I’m 54 years old. I’ve leaned by doing long range planning that developing new leadership is essential for the vitality and survival of institutions.

That you don’t see anyone coming up to take over is a massive failure of the current leadership, all of whom are approach 80 years old.

I’d be ok with Biden if it came down to it, except that in addition to his son dying, Bidden has this other family “issue” that would be exploited to the hilt by Trumpkin and his supporters and likely would be brought up any other Republican candidate. I think Biden is the better man for not exposing his family to more trouble, even if it’s largely bullshit

Joe Biden already had his run for the Oval Office, and fell by the wayside. He should accept his elder statesman status, run for the Senate if he likes, or some other cabinet position under the next administration, and abandon any talk of trying to run for President of a party that is desperate for fresh, younger, energetic faces to lead the Dems forward. We need diversity and relative youth to get out the vote, not more old party remnants.

A lot of Rs and some Ds voted for the oldest president we’ve ever had. He was and remains unfit for the job, and yet his age was not a deterrent to all those people. Moreover, I don’t see Rs eating their own old leaders, Grassley, Roberts, et al who need to get out of the way, but instead keep on reelecting them.

Joe fits the description of elder statesman by any definition, and I don’t think he’ll seriously pursue a candidacy. But he’s living on the fumes of his vice-presidency when President Obama told him according to Joe’s memoir, which is BTW why we’re hearing so much from him lately.

“Joe, if I had the power of appointment, I’d appoint you president. We agree on the issues, I know your leadership skills, and I think you’d be the best president.”

Seems like you and Joe are on the same page there. Let’s hope we can all find the next guy to step up, so Joe can get his wish and be the guy helping, not the guy trying to do it himself.

“You hold the pen and the Lord will write the sentence,” he said.

This is too bad. I thought more of John Kasich until he said this. I thought he was more of a leader. Instead, he just wants to stick his finger in the air and see which way the Lord breaks wind.

[/quote]I’m not saying that he could not do the job, or that he would not be better than any candidate that the TGOP could produce, but I have been around long enough to remember his major mistakes (plagiarism scandal, Clarence Thomas hearings) as well as his successes. He projects the image of an affable, long-time dealmaker and legislator, but I don’t think that is what the party needs in the forefront of the conversation at this point. He could be a tremendous help behind the scenes though, in the event the Dems actually get enough members in Congress to pursue their agenda.

Schiff would be outstanding at anything he chose to do. He seems to not be an alarmist, remains cool, uses complete coherent sentence, qualities we’d look for in a leader but instead got one who has none of them, and the crowd roars because of it.

Most of us know what it is, and it’s never been something he’s talked about, and shouldn’t be expected to. But it would be exploited to the hilt causing even more pain for those involved.

@llamaspit With all the talk about “new (read young), fresh” Dem leadership, for him to even consider running and for us to even continue that conversation is beyond comprehension, but I think he gets it. He’s pushing his memoir so must say stuff when he’s called on.

I have heard Eric Garcetti (mayor of L.A.) mentioned. I don’t know much about him, and a jump from mayor to POTUS seems a big one, but I remember being bigly impressed with a long interview that NPR did with him a year or so ago. Bright, well-spoken, accomplished and great sense of humor. A Rhodes Scholar, married to another Rhodes Scholar. (Uh-oh….an elite!)

Mayor to pres candidacy is huge jump, and I can’t think of a mayor in the modern era who’s been nominated let alone won. But don’t you know they’d drag Gil Garcetti into the mix and reminders that as LA DA he lost the OJ case. But Adam S. is married to Eve, that would be fun to have around.

You don’t have to sell me on Schiff, I am a huge fan. But, so far, I haven’t seen the same level of enthusiasm from a lot of others when I bring his name up. Maybe he just isn’t known well enough so far. He has made his mark as an outspoken critic of donnie, but not everyone pays attention to that…at least not at the level of your average TPMer.

I agree that Biden should not run, but hey, let’s deal with 2018 before we start handicapping the 2020 Presidential race. It’s like the rush to start celebrating Christmas 10 days before Thanksgiving. What’s the hurry, people??

Well Dump is what the same age as Biden? And Dump got elected President. I will support anyone no matter how old they are.

I would never vote for Biden, please watch the Anita Hill story, and know how he threw her “under the bus” for political reasons. Maybe if he had stood up to Danforth, we would not had all of these women coming out on sexual harassment, at least it would not be a surprise, and Americans could not use the excuse of not knowing. So, Biden is not appropriate for you to run, give the next generation a chance to “shine”.
