Discussion: Biden Hits Sour Note When Touting His Friendship With Segregationists

After Rep. Chaka Fattah ran for mayor in Philly and lost some years ago, a sharp commentator said: “The race was his to lose and he was just the guy to do it!”

Dems don’t need enthusiasm they need some reality checks. We lost the battle last time and there isn’t going to be a next time. If we lose in 2020, that’s it guys, no more chances at “revolution.”

It’s unfortunate, but what Biden said is going to resonate with a lot of White people who think of themselves as “allies” with POC but who really aren’t. I’ll take their vote.

Shorter Biden: it would be wrong to make racist bigots uncomfortable about their racist bigotry.

Why do you think these idiots are going to participate in any “revolution”?

good luck getting lots of black support by pointing out how good you were at compromising with white supremacists…

No. What Biden said is giving permission for a lot of white people who maybe think Trump is a bit too dumb and/or extreme to continue to vote for the current crop of bigoted white assholes, a/k/a Republicans. Biden is campaigning for President on a strategy of shitting on every single downballot race.

This is Biden. Maybe he can win. But he’s lazy and sloppy, and he doesn’t bother to correct mistakes; he keeps repeating them. He’s not the guy I’d pick to save civilization. He’s Tom Bombadil—too scatterbrained to trust the Ring with. If he cared enough to do the fucking work involved and pull up his socks it would be nice, but that isn’t him now and never was. He never went very far in his other campaigns and maybe people are starting to see why.

Biden has been saying racist things and writing and sponsoring legislation deliberately harmful to African-Americans, particularly black men, his whole career.

All these “moderates” who support Biden like to lecture POC about how we don’t have a choice but to vote for Dem candidates who try hard to court Republicans during election time. There is a choice - not vote at all.

Then these same quasi-Republicans come out after the election to blame Blacks and Latinos for not turning out to vote.

It all ends if we don’t win. Period. That’s it. It’s a wrap for this country. If I’ve got to swallow Joe’s extreme insensitivity and utter tone deafness where it concerns his Gone With the Wind-esque views of racist Republicans, I’m fine with it. If I’ve got to look the other way on some of his policies, I don’t care as long as he can win and take the country back. I don’t see how anyone who saw that rally doesn’t get that.

Well, I am black, and I can pretty much promise you that this isn’t going to change his commanding lead among black voters. We’ve got bigger fish to fry. Much bigger ones.

I know that I’ve said this before but I’m even more convinced of it now.

The regime is going to ahve a hard time taking Biden down because, in some ways, since they’re of the same generation, Biden is the antithesis of Rump. The ammunition they’d have for any of the other Dem candidates aren’t quite as powerful against Biden. I realize that the online Left doesn’t get this; they see these statements of his as campaign ending. In earlier times, they would have been. But, a this point in time, they have a strange counter effect.

As much as I like Joe, this disqualifies him as a strong Dem candidate. This will get used against him, as well as the Anita Hill stuff. Times then were different than they are now. I like Joe. I think his time is past and I know why he didn’t run before (due to Beau’s passing - completely support his decision).

But this is gonna be a nightmare: this statement, the ‘curing cancer’ thing and Anita Hill. That’s a pretty strong basis on which to defeat Joe and get another four years of Trump.

You’re going to be quite surprised after he sweeps the Southern primaries.

“Biden proudly said that Eastland called him “son” and not “boy.”
As the Post points out, it’s unclear why Biden felt that this was an indication of respect, as “boy” was a derogatory identifier used to degrade black men.”

This is interesting. It tells more about him than just “working with racists”.

There aren’t that many Black people who are willing to crucify Biden over Anita Hill. That’s the reality. Any White women who are willing to keep Rump in the WH won’t be won over anyway.

Yep, imo, he’s the antidote to all of this. Plus, I feel pretty strongly that a white guy who has at times been pretty problematic will have a better chance to speak to white people about racism. They don’t hear it when it comes from black people. They just dismiss us as playing the race card and then go on to tell us what and how we should feel about a situation. And that’s just our allies. But white folks do tend to listen to other white folks calling them out, especially older white folks. Such criticism is given an air of credibility when it comes from a white face. I’m not suggesting he can fix racism in this country. That won’t happen in my lifetime if I live to be 100. I’m suggesting he will have a unique ability to force white folks to confront it.

Every time the Democrats nominate the “safest” and “best chance to win” candidate, we lose.

I’m not convinced he’s those things this time around. The safest and best candidate would be a Seth Moulton, Bullock, or any of the other non-controversial white guys in the race. You guys keep naming all the reasons why Joe isn’t safe and not the best candidate and then turn around and claim he’s the safest and best candidate. I don’t get it.

One thing that I think POC (and especially Black people) have learned the very hard way is that White fragility in America is alive and well. We just can’t get anything accomplished unless we deal with that. I said this EXACTLY right after Nov. 2016: our so-called “allies” decided that enough progress had been made. No need to go any further. Somehow, we have got to get thought to them and, as you say, Biden might be the one to provide some kind of bridge. At the very least, he can speak to them where they just won’t listen to us.

It might be coincidence but every time they did that they were either trying to win “the third term” or to challenge an incumbent rethug in his first term. This time is no different. Curious what will happen.
