Discussion: Biden Has Smaller Advantage In Iowa, New CNN/Des Moines Register Poll Shows

Yes, it’s going to get very interesting, very soon!

I don’t think anyone really knows how this is going to shake out, but I anticipate an even uglier campaign than the last. More Big Lies trumpeted loudly. More dirty dealing under the table.

Biden and Sanders were only ahead due to name recognition. Right now, if I had to bet, I’d put money on either Buttigieg or Warren getting the nomination. I don’t really see anyone else doing all that well unless something changes in the next six months.

And I, for one, am glad that he’s there.

I agree for the most part. Both Warren and Buttigieg are among my top 4 or 5 favorites. I wouldn’t count out a few others yet either.

Why is this new poll so important that it got more coverage than others?

I agree with you, but with considerable sadness. I think this is going to be a long, miserable slog to the end. Any sense of entertainment value will be completely suppressed under the constant recognition that the outcome might really determine the future of the country.

Yes. He’s a very sharp guy and if nothing else, he appears to be a master troller of Mike Pence. As a president, I don’t know. Owing to his lack of state or federal level experience in governance, I tend to think he’d face a lot of problems coordinating and influencing hard nosed, hard driven, double dealing congresspersons and senators who’d see him as an outsider. And the Republicans would be even harder on him.

For me, right now there’s Warren and Harris and everyone else. But I can’t really say I have that much of a dog in this fight. I’ll gleefully support and vote for whoever the nominee is.

The Flavor of the Month Club is beginning to learn that Uncle Pullmyfinger doesn’t wear well at all and never has. His vanity campaign will soon come apart and, thankfully, there’s plenty of time to repair the damage he’s doing to the party.

Because the Iowa Poll’s methodology has changed, the results are not directly comparable to past Iowa Polls of this presidential field.

The above statement was near the end of the poll & explains the difference in numbers from the last poll, per Des Moines Register.

Yes, Buttigieg is a master troller, even of Trump. He never stoops to Trump’s level, but is so very quick, calm, and cutting - i.e. his response to Trump calling him Alfred E. Newman. Whether he wins the nomination or not, he has already done so much to boost and ā€œnormalizeā€ the LGBT community.

Plus I believe that Buttigieg will campaign his butt off for whomever eventually wins the nomination.

Sanders running a vanity campaign? :open_mouth:

To me, the only truly significant thing out of this poll is that Beto fade. He’s been spending a lot of time in Iowa, but not picking up support. In may, he attended 21 events. No one else even came close to that, according to the Des Moines Register If he doesn’t hit a home run in the debates, I think he’s toast.

Remember that Iowa is a caucus state and that it will be imperative for ā€œnot Bidenā€ voters to coalesce with other people’s choices to reach the 15% (?) threshold to get any Warren, Harris or Buttigieg delegates out of any given caucus.

I think many Democrats view Trump as an historically weak incumbent with significant baggage, and a chance to run against someone like that may not come along in many years.

That being said, the Democratic Party would be much better off some of our brightest stars would run in statewide elections in red states.

its Iowa? First off the block and all.

Unless a candidate is ostensibly eschewing Iowa, they are written off by the media if they don’t do well there. Iowa is the great winnower – do well in iowa, and you’ll get enough money to get to super tuesday. Fail in Iowa, and its pretty much over.

Thank you. In reality, there are only about 3 maybe 4 actual candidates for POTUS . The remainder are more candidates for the Senate and should have focused on that. I think that some of them are there simply to get some of their ideas out there (i.e. Hick and Inslee) and some are angling for Cabinet positions.

I know but why not polls conducted by other organizations? Though I think this one is quite accurate.

And the black vote.

Be careful where you put your money. Although to me Warren would be a better bet. I don’t see Sanders gaining more unless Warren drops out. That’s the problem right now i believe they are splitting the vote. I think Biden can wind up being the compromise candidate. Will get a better look when a bunch of these candidates drop out.
