Discussion: Biden Backlash: Dem Rivals Hit Veep For Highlighting 'Civility' With Segregationists

Thanks for posting that link. I’ve done it a few times in other Biden threads but I don’t want to over-do it. It’s good for more people to be bringing it up. That episode still seems to be under the radar, but one of the other candidates or their surrogates will bring it up eventually.

Excuse me, but isn’t Saint AOC working with Ted Cruz on something right now? There would not be medicare today if politicians like Ted Kennedy did not know how to work that system. Biden’s only point here is that he was able to work with people he did not always agree with. Whereas today we have Mitch McConnell running the Senate like his own personal fiefdom.

He did not heap praise on segregationists.

Biden IS a willful segregationist. Not long ago, he reiterated his longstanding opposition to the Brown v Bd of Ed decision and desegregation of schools, including busing, arguing that desegregation undermined Black culture. See the article documenting this in The Nation.

Bullshit, dear.

when you are praising yourself for pursuing a course of “civility”, then talk about how “civil” a couple of toxic racists are, its pretty clear that you are praising the racists for their civility as much as you are praising yourself.

and he can say that.

without praising segregationists.

Biden used two of the worst Senators to show that even horrid, retrograde assholes could be dealt with successfully if you work at it.

Your ability to misread absolutely everything remains unchallenged.

Keep in mind that not all that long ago there were Southern Democrats like Byrd who would obviously be called segregationists. What Biden is talking about is working with people that you do not always agree with. Maybe you think he should have refused to work with them, even if it meant he failed to accomplish something he thought was important…but the point is that not all that long ago, both parties were extremely lacking in this regard. Biden was Obama’s VP. I doubt very much that Obama would have given him that job if he thought he was insensitive about race. No doubt, the easily offended will continue to be offended.

God help us all if Biden gets the nomination. We’d be doomed.

Does ‘working at it’ include cement overshoes?

What about concrete galoshes?

biden was a freshman senator who kissed the asses of segregationists because it would help him in the Senate – my guess is that by 1973, most decent Democrats avoided these racists whenever they could, because by that time racism was no longer acceptable to most Dems. Biden doesn’t seem to have much of a problem with it — he treated them like they were just opponents in a college debating society, that went to dinner once the debate was over, and everything was hunky-dory.

WHY WAS BIDEN DINING WITH SEGREGATIONISTS?!?!?

You remain singularly incapable of understanding basic concepts of holding political office as part of a group that must, when possible, work together for the betterment of everyone.

I am incapable of praising people who exploit racism to advance themselves – which is what Biden did. I mean, why would he go to an ardent segregationist for advice/help on getting re-elected?

Thanks for proving my point.

Now sit down and shut the fuck up.

you’ll the kind of person who would witness a Klan rally, and ask how they got their sheets so white…

And you’re a liar.

He did NOT say that, You did. Here is what Biden said:

> “At least there was some civility. We got things done,” Biden said. "We
> didn’t agree on much of anything. We got things done. We got it
> finished."

“Not agreeing on much of anything” is not at all like ‘good people on both sides’.

One thing Trump has done is to drive many of us crazy. I am sure that Sanders’ relentless negativism toward Clinton led to her defeat in 2020. Today we have a candidate (Biden) with an excellent chance of beating Trump, and a field of other candidates who would likely lose to Trump. So what do those other candidates do? They bash Biden for wanting to be civil to the congresspeople that are there through no fault of his own.

I am getting very pessimistic about the 2020 election. Not because we don’t have an electable candidate who can beat Trump. We do. But because it appears that Democrats are likely to blow it by insisting on ideological purity.

I’ve entertained the possibility that Lukasiac is a Republican troll. You know that there must be some around.

Sorry, but it’s not the democrats that are insisting on that. At least the majority of them anyway.
