Discussion: Beto Tells Maddow He 'Can Do A Better Job' Connecting To National Audiences

He can do a better job by having more substance.

ā€œhe acknowledged that he ā€˜could do a better jobā€™ using bigger platforms to share his campaign messageā€

He canā€™t do a better job. What is he going to talk about? His record? He has no record. Maybe his DUI or burglary charges.

The sooner this empty-suit grifter fizzles out, the better for the real candidates.

He can do a better job at looking like he has had more ā€œsubstancesā€ than the other candidates.

Perhaps heā€™s not ready for the national scene. But I like him and Mayor Pete.

If itā€™s not obvious to you by now that this guy is not the answer, you are tone deaf.

For a candidate catching as much flak as Beto is for being a lousy candidate, he sure is garnering a lot of attention in the media. Why is that? Perhaps thereā€™s a ā€œcharmā€ factor that none of the others have, that comes across as the perfect counterweight to the orange menace.

I think heā€™ll scale up nicely. But at some point heā€™s going to have to throw some serious shade on Trump.

Or to put it another way, despite the favor the media has done for him, heā€™s still losing support and more and more people have come to see him as a lousy candidate. It clearly shows that ā€œcharmā€ alone cannot work. Itā€™s a necessary trait but not a sufficient one.

Why not give him a talk show? Seems like a good fit.

Upvoted for Mayor Pete who doesnā€™t have a snowballā€™s chance in hell but I like him anyway.

MSM is in the tank for anyone whoā€™s not too ā€œradicalā€.

The rich fear change and fundamental equity more than the reich-wing.

I listened as long as I could stand it as he babbled on, serving up little more than platitudes and navel-gazing. Heā€™s a disappointment.

I was also disappointed that Maddow failed to ask him about his refusal to support Gina Ortiz Jones in her bid to win a Texas congressional seat in 2018. Heā€™s been asked about it before, but refused to answer, other than to say, ā€œI canā€™t take a pledge to support every Democrat in the country.ā€

That view from 35,000 feet must be dizzying.

I was so grateful to hear a discussion of foreign policy since the issue has been largely ignored in the primary thus far. Beto spoke with passion, insight and historical knowledge about the necessity of US leadership in promoting democracy, especially with our neighbors to the south, and how that can be achieved through diplomacy and multilateral alliances, as seen in the negotiations for the Iran deal. Iā€™ve heard him speak elsewhere with nuance about healthcare and immigration. Anyone who says heā€™s an empty suit clearly has paid no attention to Beto or is eager to dismiss him. Heā€™s sharp as whip and prepared on all domestic and international issues. He also has the capacity to inspire people.

Probably because he is a very wealthy white male from the south with a pretty face.

Actually, I watched his debate performance with Ted Cruz, and it was very mediocre as is his congressional record.

Unless you like Dems who vote with Republicans. Then you might like his congressional record.

Iā€™ll admit Iā€™m suspicious of candidates with high charm to substance ratios. In my state, many such candidates have either been voted out of office after one term or ended up in prison.

Come on people, he was a punk rocker. Whatā€™s not to like?

Good luck!

The memes circulating about Beto on this thread alone are pretty telling. Someoneā€™s frightened by him because heā€™s the opposite of what they say on every score: substantial with detailed positions on just about every issue, knowledgeable about the civil rights struggle and attentive to his own privilege, and original in his approach. So happy to listen to an candidate who doesnā€™t rely on pat formulas like ā€œhereā€™s the dealā€ and who is candid about where he stands.

Beto came close enough to knocking off Carnival Cruz, to be an actual disappointment, as opposed to someone whose courage for at least trying was to be commended. He should be busy taking a shot at Cornyn! Flipping the Senate is as important as dumping the Rump, and far more important than whatever marginal difference exists between President Beto and President Any Other Democrat.

Hilarious!

(I wonder how the result would differ if the true origin of ā€œArabic Numeralsā€ were given.)
