“Younger” = Gen X moderates.
Yep that is what it says in the article.
He’s not a Populist or far left which is why he almost won his race against Cruz and in fact I think he did - I think there was evoting hankypanky.
He’s an Obama moderate.
(Native Texan here) I really like him–I followed his race against Cruz as closely as I could from Kansas–but I also think it’s too soon for him. I’d much rather he run for Senate; we need more Dems there, really.
I really like him too and followed the race from New Mexico since that’s where I am in the summer and fall. I was completely blown away by what a phenomenon he became so I’m open to this run.
There’s little point in talking about experience anymore. Not after Trump.
Well, Beto does listen… and seems capable of coherent thought. (Versus, I’m smarter than the generals…)
And the AOC “Moderates are meh” firebrands – he does stake some fairly progressive positions on marijuana legalization, Medicare for All, etc. It’s just that like most “moderates” we’d like to see more than the underwear gnome business plan for how to get there.
He’s totally in favor of legalization and he’s totally committed to healthcare reform-Medicare for all - yep. I wouldn’t be high on him if he didn’t support those things.
I agree we need to hear how we get there, although legalization is easy if you can get the GOP to cooperate - just change the drug schedule classification.
You’re on the money there though I still do wonder if he’s a touch too green – but more as a campaigner than president. I worry there, but I know he’d be able to get the best of the best on board if he’s elected so that alone makes him a million times better for the office than Trump, even with no experience. All he’d need is a great COS, and he’d be good to go.
And I know you were there for his Texas campaign so I think I’m going to trust you that he’s also got what it takes for the campaign trail, and try to stop worrying. Have to say, he’s copped a really good message. I watched his announcement video and he’s got it down. So I’m really waiting to see how this plays out. Even this early, I suspect that Iowa will flip over him, which would give him great momentum.
And Trump can go fuck himself about the hands. I talk with my hands too. Lots of us do, so hang him for that? Not likely.
O the hands thing just tells me that Trump is already scared of him.
I really think a ticket with him and Biden would be a winner, i.e. pull in enough white male only voters to defeat the F’ed up EC. Sad that the US still leans hard toward men and white, but at least those two probably would have a cabinet filled with women, non-whites, non-christian and non-heterosexual to take up for it. And push an agenda that supports all people. Then in 4 or 8 more years we can have a woman, non-white, non-herto presidential team finally and win for sure.
I disagree. What I want after PP is loads of experience because that’s what we’re going to need to clean up the mess he’s made both at home and abroad. I want someone with lots of experience in government who maybe even has existing relationships with our allies who can work to rebuild relationships the fat ass has ripped apart. I think experience almost matters more to me now than it did before.
I hear you about Biden but that would be kind of a repeat. I’d also love to see someone like Buttigieg running with O’Rourke. But if O’Rourke should take the nomination, I think he’d really need to take a woman for VP, and I think he probably knows that too.
So now who else needs a job? Stacey Abrams???
Getting Mrs. Grundy & the other GOP church ladies to cooperate is nigh on impossible… it’s why I have to go to Louisiana to gamble.
I understand that.
I think Beto would be able to hire the right people who could facilitate those things. But I totally understand where you are coming from.
The Democratic Party isn’t going to run two white men again anytime soon. It would be a colossally stupid thing to skip over all those qualified female senators and pick a white guy. Biden needs Harris. That combo would absolutely trounce PP.
Interesting thing here - a whole lot of evangelical Texas women deserted church and husband/boyfriend, anti-abortion belief, everything for Beto when he ran against Cruz. He’s the only candidate I’ve seen who could do that.
Maybe so, but I just think we need someone who has run a large organization. I like Beto a lot. I just don’t think he’s what we need right now.
I share your deep concerns about the rifts with allies and the loss of American influence and prestige. I would really prefer Biden as secretary of state rather than president.
I don’t think O’Rourke really has the skill and experience to get anything done domestically with intransigents like Mitch McConnell around, and if there’s a big enough wave to elect a Democratic Senate, it would sweep someone more progressive into the Oval Office.
He was a great candidate for Texas, but I don’t want a country that looks like Texas…
The reason I’m high on him is because I think we need someone who can win. When he gets going he is such a phenomenon.
