Discussion: Bernstein: Russia Scandal Feels 'Worse Than Watergate In Many, Many Ways'

People who read NYT might know that Jacob Bernstein, son of Carl, has turned out to be a terrific writer. He’s produced some really great pieces, but how could he not with Carl and Norah’s genes.

They reached retirement age, 74 and 73 respectively. Their replacement seems to be David Fahrenthold, who got a Pulitzer for his reporting.

Uh yeah, conspiring with foreign enemies during a presidential election is pretty much worse than keeping that work here in American and done by Americans.

Yet another place where Donnie Two Scoops’ policies are failing the American worker…

It’s a scary thing to consider what it may mean if the worst that’s currently speculated turns out to be true regarding collusion. At least Nixon appears to have known on some level the moral ramifications of what he had done and stepped down from office. Trump is pathological, and not only would he refuse to resign, he’d fight the allegations tooth and nail. With a willing and influential right-wing media to help him out, he’d drag an alarming percentage of Americans to his side. It doesn’t sound that far fetched to believe the current Republican legislature would choose to just sit on its hands in trying to remove him from office if their own survival doesn’t look to be at play. If that happens this country needs to start hammering the panic button hard, regarding its own future. I don’t know if that sounds a little too hyperbolic, but we may soon be in very uncharted territory.

What happened? Well, it’s a funny thing, but every couple hundred years we need younger people to take over where older people left off.

Hear, hear. And here I was thinking of how much of an improvement it is to have Bernstein instead of Woodward out there opining.

O god yes! Woodward turned into a Republican somehow.

The most patriotic, ethical and humane thing that could be done right now, today, is for Twitter to take down his account permanently. Taking away his “platform” to disseminate lies and hatred and his ability to incite violence could very well save the world.

This cannot continue.

Oh yeah. Lazy, complacent, and pompous are not good looks.

You got that pompous just exactly right.

And the sorriest of the sorry in this event, Mr. Bernstein, is your own work universe. Had Watergate happened in this climate, Nixon would probably still be in charge. The lack of great journalism, not just good journalism but GREAT journalism, is what makes this story so very much worse. That there is a universe out there that discredits the mass media (in many ways, well deserved for their behavior over the last two years) is emblematic of how far the nation has fallen. That people believe they’re allowed their own set of FACTS, rather than opinion, is just a further descent into end game.

You probably would’ve been fired as soon as you brought the story to your bosses, had it happened today.

This characteristics are, however, very Republican.

Ditto with my dad. He was a minister, and now he’s an atheist.

And gay!

Mine was a Rockefeller Democrat born when Coolidge was in office. 94 now and he hates Trump.

My father was a Roosevelt Democrat until they moved to Texas and he got older and more concerned with his reputation in the community and all the shit that goes with reaching that stage of life. He’s been dead since '88 so I have no idea what he would have thought of Trump but he defended Nixon to the end.

My mother became a Republican in Texas too, but she was an equal opportunity hater of fools and she hated Nixon even more than she hated LBJ (it was his vulgarity that drove her crazy, not his policies.)

my old man is my husband. facetiously of course.

what’s your problem?

The lack of perception and ignorance of questioners.

The difference being a president subverting the Constitution and a hostile foreign power invading our electoral process and our internal social media with the aim to sow dissention and confusion among our citizenry and to get an authortarian asshat elected. Our adversaries know trump to be the worst possible person to be in office. It’s very much to their advantage to have an unstable and ignorant nut case in the Oval Office.

They got old and tired. Happens to the best of us eventually. Woodward also got insufferably smug and full of himself which in all fairness can’t be said about Bernstein.
