Discussion: Bernie Sanders Releases His 2014 Tax Return

“They’re pretty boring, I’m afraid,” Sanders told The Associated Press on Saturday during his visit to Rome, where also met with Pope Francis. “No $225,000 speaking engagements.”

Man, what a sourpuss this guy is. He just has the good fortune to be running against one of the most charisma-challenged politicians of our lifetime (albeit a highly-qualified one).

Bernie always fails to note that as a sitting member of Congress, he is forbidden by law from accepting any pay for any speech anywhere.

He also gave less than 5% of his income to charity.

One? Wait…I am pretty sure Bernie said during the debate he was releasing all of them for 8 years.

And ironically, while claiming that they haven’t had time to go home to release even this one…they released it when he was in an entirely different continent from his home. So doesn’t sound like that particular excuse is credible.

None of his excuses are credible.

Chad sez:

Since 1976, every major party presidential nominee has released full tax returns.

This is wrong. Mitt Romney did not release ANY full tax returns in 2012. Of course, the press let him get away with it, no problem, and now apparently completely forgotten.

But as to the Sanders, I’d certainly like to see their 2015 tax return, see how much money they have skimmed off the gullible college grads keeping that pathetic campaign afloat. They certainly have a great racket going! You can’t blame them for riding that pony just as long as those dollars keep flowing in.

Why is it so hard to release tax returns? I would think Sanders would have the most boring returns of anyone and would be the first to put them out there. I really don’t get why he’s so slow with this. It makes no sense.

So why did he resist for so long? There’s nothing in there that sets off alarms, except it’s a bit weird that Mrs. S has such a tiny pension. (No wonder they’re mad at Wall Street!) And they only released one year-- no reason for the others being kept away. Surely it’s not just being pissy and resistant. Why run for president if you’re annoyed at the expectations?

Here he blamed his wife and made her seem disorganized and forgetful, and apparently for no reason.

Trump, now we can assume HE has a reason not to let us see his returns.

So now we know Bernie is upper middle class, Hillary is of the top 1%. And that is why Bernie cares about ordinary people, and Hillary cares about Hillary.

I have been hopeful that Bernie would exert what could have been construed as a little more effort on this — I mean, the older returns should already be done —

Maybe the delegate numbers are finally sinking in and he knows it would not help him anyway —

Stop and think about this for a moment.

Someone making $10,000 a year gives 5% to charity, meaning he has to live on $9,500. He’ll starve to death.

Someone making $100,000 a year gives 5% to charity, meaning he has to live on $95,000. He’s being very generous.

Someone making $1,000,000 a year gives 5% to charity, meaning he has to live on $950,000. He’s doing the reasonable thing.

In short, percentages are relative to the gross, so you can’t compare them directly.

In 2014, the Clintons donated more than $3 million— nearly 11 percent of
their income. Since 2000, the Clintons have given nearly $15 million to
 charity, tax returns show.

The Clintons gave nearly 11% ! ! of total income ! ! —

The article doesn’t show what % Bernie has given — It would be interesting to compare —
Maybe he hasn’t given anything ?? —
That would say a lot about what Bernie cares about —

Not releasing your taxes-- isn’t revolutionary Senator.

Regarding persona?
I’d like one common, simple trait from a (D) candidate for POTUS.
A measure of predictability in temperament.
I want boring.

Realizing how blessed we’ve been with No-Drama-Obama.

TPM’s line “The share of his family’s income that went to charity was about one-third the percentage of income that his primary opponent, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, gave to charitable groups” is obviously intended to deceive the innumerate into thinking that Sanders isn’t as philanthropic as the saintly Clintons. But of course it is far easier for someone with millions in income to give away 15% than it is for someone with less than 1/10 of that income to give away 5%.
But you seem to have fallen for the scam.

Honestly .I give more to my animal and environmental charities and I am retired and on a fixed income and I didn’t earn over $200,000 a year when I worked.

That’s for sure.

But are you also trying to maintain one residence in your home state and one in D.C.? And are you expected to incur the sorts of entertainment expenses that a Congresscritter is?

Given the cost of living in D.C., coupled with the various limitations and prohibitions on outside income, I have to conclude that anyone who gets rich while serving in Congress must be on the take.

All respectable.

If he’s the Democratic candidate, I would still happily work and vote for him or Mrs. Clinton. I respect Mr. Sanders’ life of modest means. That probably scares the oligarchs more than anything.

Capitalism depends on increasing rates of growth. It’s the antithesis of having enough.

No, he eventually released some of them, late in the campaign. They showed that his accountants were extremely aggressive about gaming the system.

Still, I (think I) recall that even then they weren’t the whole return, but summaries of each year. I’ll gladly concede to your superior memory, though.
