Discussion for article #236806
The trade deal is a bad idea…like most of these trade deals, they aren’t actually about allowing companies in Chile or New Zealand better trade deals, but rather about allowing US corporations operating in those countries to import their products to the US from sources of incredibly cheap labor.
Let’s not forget allowing our big agricultural concerns to export our hormone-and-antibiotic-laden meats and genetically-modified-to-enable-carcinogenic-herbicide produce to countries who wouldn’t otherwise accept them. And of course to make sure we’ll never label our food with country of origin, dolphin-safe, GMO, or other pertinent information on which consumers may choose to make buying decisions.
Yep. Basically, this is about making sure that US Corporations get rich and turn the US into a Third World Country and the rest of the world into vassal states.
Refreshing clarity and frankness – expect nothing less from Sanders… No mealy-mouthed, calculated-to-appeal-to-all-positions posturing from Bernie, unlike other candidates seeking to attract voters this cycle… Americans might begin to like this sort of candor and passion, and if so, other candidates will have to decide if their highly contrived cautiousness can compete.
“The minimum wage in Vietnam is 56 cents an hour,” the senator continued. “Workers there cannot form independent unions. And if you protest government policy, you might end up in trouble. OK?”
Holy Cow!!!
This in a communist/socialist Country? Who knew!!!
What can I say, I love Sen. Bernie Sanders, that’s all there is to it.
and what can the U.S. do to stop this, realistically?
Not a goddamn thing.
Or, not that much. Nice to have his voice around, but he doesn’t come off as someone who actually are going to be in the room making imperfect deals that will in various ways make things a bit better. Because that is what ultimately we can do now unless a major change occurs in Congress and the country.
What we could do is negotiate trade deal that focused on worker’s rights, instead of corporate sovereignty. But that’s not something congress can do - they just voted to deny themselves that power.
When you have no chance of winning you can say any “Goddamned” thing you want.
Bernie has always been like this. He’s open, honest, and unlike people like Mitt Romney, doesn’t have to try and ride the coattails of his father regarding Civil Rights. Bernie was at the March on Washington, and was a student organizer for the SNCC during the 1960’s.
What we can do is not allow US Corporations to move their operations to Vietnam and then ship their goods home without any checks or tariffs, which is what trade agreements like this basically allow.
The fact that so much is hidden is the weird thing. I can only hope that the hidden stuff is really good for workers on both sides and it’s hidden so the corps. and republicans will vote for it even if it reduces the money they get out of it. But I just don’t know.
Yes. You can wish that at the end of every rainbow there is a pot of gold waiting, too. But it doesn’t make it so in either case.
In Vietnam?
Damn it!
I’m not so sure Bernie has no chance of winning the Democratic nomination. If you listen, the man makes a lot of sense, especially when it comes to diagnosing the problem. I don’t know about all of his policy prescriptions but they need to be given a serious look.
You know he doesn’t have a chance because we would get our asses handed to us if he did. Shades of Eugene McCarthy. I love Bernie Sanders but the party will not get behind him and he knows it. His purpose is to do exactly what he is doing, but you know that
they say he cant win…my ass he cant if everyone who gave a damm about this country…that would leave conservatives out…they would vote for this tru patriot a man that actually walks the walk and talks the talk…and isnt scared to show the courage of his convictions
I must say, his candor is refreshing.
