Discussion: Bernie Sanders Backs Rep. Keith Ellison For DNC Chair

Excellent choice. Ellison will give the DNC a newer younger face.

Not a bad idea. As I said, those protests need to be harnessed etc. and they were largely activated, motivated Bernie supporters…or at least some of the organizers were in some cities based ont he reports I saw. Maybe Ellison can function in aspects as a means of bringing these people into the fold.

The real problem though, is how to make it abundantly clear to them that they’re becoming part of a team, a coalition, not taking over and not achieving the coup they wished they’d achieved during the primaries.

In the same interview with the AP, Sanders said it was an “embarrassment” to the Democratic Party that white working class Americans voted in large numbers for President-elect Donald Trump.

that’s looks like a scab to me…pass

I support Ellison though.

it will take time, but that’s a good first step.

Keith Ellison, yes, continuing to obsess on the “white” working class – whatever that means – no.

Why shouldn’t they take over? The current Democratic party has done nothing for the working class.

Hell yes! (My own rep, too.) Just the guy we need to take a cue from Sen. Dole, 1993, and say this:

“A majority of Americans who voted voted against Donald Trump, and I intend to represent the majority.”

Personally, I disagree. Ellison is an excellent Congressman and appears to be well liked. I believe we need his progressive voice in Congress. The DNC is primarily the fundraising arm for the Dem party. Its a role for glad handing.

My choice would be Cory Booker. I’ve always felt he was a too conservative for NJ Senate, more Blue Dog than anything. He already knows the big donors from his days as Newark mayor and he’s a person of color. He would be very good at fundraising.

The current Democratic party has done nothing for the working class.

@lysuth Would that be the SAME working class that’s wearing “Make America Great Again” hats?

Who do you think increased minimum wages help?
Who do you think the ACA helps?
Who do you think maternity leave (for both mother and father) help?
Who do you think investment in public education and job training helps?
Who do you think transitions to new blue collar jobs (e.g. solar installation) to replace expiring blue collar jobs help?

Bullshit. The Democrats have done FAR more for the “working class” than anyone else. The problem is 1) the media doesn’t explain this because it can’t be looped in a 30 second sound bite and 2) the Democrats have been too busy doing the job of government to brand/market themselves to those voters. They can change #2, but probably not #1. Don’t say they haven’t done anything though, that’s a lie.

Because my observation of the Bernie crowd, as an early supporter of his, is that they are ridiculously naive about how political campaigns work, as well as being almost exclusively very educated white people who wear rose colored glasses. They and Bernie had no sense of the “rainbow” coalition that is the Democratic Party of the South, or of a state like Nevada where the service industry is unionized and filled with Hispanics, making it easier to organize and vote.

I like it. I think he’s a smart, forward thinking choice AND I can hear the GOPpers now…‘letting a MUSLIM in charge of the DNC…tsk tsk…’ It’s time to SHOW the country what we’re made of!

The economic hurt of middle and working class is bullshit. It is all about fear and hatred of “the other” - anyone who doesn’t look, think, and act exactly like them. I live amongst these people. They are racist, sexist homophobes who have no clue about who they actually are. They think they are doing what Jesus would have them do. Trump is just hastening the End of Days, and the Rapture is coming in these people’s lifetimes, or so they believe. I am serious. I’ve had this whole Jesus is coming explained and “shown” to me over and over.

Well, the democratic party can choose to ignore the white working class again, at their own peril. The party needs to find a message and path that addresses the white working class voter concerns and needs to speak to that segment better that they did this election cycle.

In a perfect world, Booker is a great candidate, but aside from wanting to see something ; Ellison is the person who’s needed

I like both choices. The best candidate is the one who is the best organizer and who can replicate Dean’s 50 State Strategy. The DNC is filled with way too many traditional political thinkers.
