Discussion: Bergdahl Uproar Halts Plan For Return Celebration

Discussion for article #223539

“…This community will welcome him back no matter what…”

A traditional American value rejected by the conservative movement. No group is better at defaming the service of our men and women in uniform than the Republican Party’s operatives.

Sergeant Bergdahl’s return is an unqualified good thing. Whether he was a hero or a deserter can get sorted out later. Unfortunately, Sergeant Bergdahl and his family have gotten caught up in all the dysfunction of our current political situation: the post 911 myth of the super-terrorist and the permanent and all-pervasive war on terror, the polarized 24-7 media environment and the GOP’s fervent desire to find any scandal that can gain traction and be used to damage the Obama Administration and hurt Hillary’s 2016 prospects.

depressingly and utterly predictable.
i never could have envisioned a time when the republican party and its national leaders (and good number of cowardly democrats) would engage in the grotesque display of maliciousness directed at this young soldier and his family.
the contempt for obama has never been a question; but the lengths these maggots are willing to go is shameful.

but, of course, they are shameless.

The facts are simply not known yet. The guy just got back, and the military is still conducting an investigation.

The pundits are going on on, with their strong opinions, and none of them know what they are talking about.
I have had to tune it out until people calm down, and more reliable information is available.

The television reporting on this has been some of worst, fact-less garbage I have ever seen in my life.

That’s a shame. This is a small town where people know this guy and his family. They may not privately think what he did was right, and they may talk about it over their kitchen tables, but they might decide that he’s already done five years of really hard time. And they likely have enough humanity left over to be glad he’s home, and if they’d been left alone by bloviating hypocrites they’d have turned out to let him know it, and let him know he was never forgotten, never not cared about. Just a shame.

the continuing degradation of the national political media, part 87,993…:

the wapo has a prominent story on how obama is a girlyman compared to that awesome manmeat that is vladimir putin… illustrated with photos and videos of their respective workouts.
seriously.

This soldier’s primary crime? Being freed by a democratic president. Does anyone honestly think we’d be going through all this had Mittens been elected president and freed the guy? Seriously?

Not to mention, Benghazi would have been forgotten a week after it happened, like all the other Benghazis that happened under Bush.

Republicans love our military and soldiers!!!

Who am I fooling? Republicans feel the same about our soldiers as they do about babies. Once the war is over and our soldiers are home or in need of help they are on THEIR OWN. Once babies are born those babies are on their own.

I wasn’t there in Afghanistan so I really do not know what caused Sgt. Bergdahl to wander away from his post and I wont judge him.

How often in the future will America again be steered into a dead end by craven pols and a corrupt media?
Should an alleged expert’s near perfect track record of failure be considered before a huge mass of citizens are intentionally guided off a cliff?
That fool Blue Dog W Va Senator said the ‘proof of life’ video “didn’t sell” him.
Ah, of course, the fault lies within the Taliban’s bad PR not the brain-damaged goons inside the Beltway, jeesch.

2 times in my military service we had people voluntarily “leave” without permission: one, a guy jumped off our aircraft carrier (SARATOGA), the other, a guy “wandered” into communist (at the time) Yugoslavia while we were on a port call in Trieste, Italy.

Both times, we got them back. Both times, the men received punishment for their stupidity. But we got them back. They’re Americans - that’s what we do. It was the moral and right thing to do in both cases.

These anti-American, democracy hating rightwingers are the human skidmarks of homo sapiens…

In the 1980s, I was the equivalent of today’s MIllennials. Young, invincible, mostly doing the right thing politically (I voted in all election years) but, generally, without a tenth of the passion of most people on this site.

Politics skews OLD. That is why the commercials on the cable news channels would make one think that they are advertising for hospitals.

One must be careful about painting an entire age cohort with one brush. But, when I worked in OCCUPY, where I live, the inspired youngsters out on the streets with OCCUPY were drowned out by the yahoos at the local football game. Unless a Millennial is someone with an extremely high I.Q. or has a natural predilection for politics or is in the news business or is just someone who is naturally charged up, there is absolutely no way that he will approach politics like older people, for whom politics is usually the Only Game In Town.

FOX has permanently destroyed the minds of an entire generation of folks over 60. Right under our noses. It’s highly unlikely that they will shift their views. And we are now faced with a conundrum.

The only people numerous enough and Progressive enough to outvote the ravenous geriatrics on the Right (for whom this POW story has a great deal of relevance) are those under 40 (people for whom the Bergdahl story may be far down on their list of priorities).

The only salvation for the United States is for Democrats to start to reject age-related behavior (e.g. the Old vote/the Young don’t) and vote as though every Democrat is 65 years old.

These tea-party, militia types are domestic terrorists. They used threats of violence to shut down Bergdahl’s celebration. I wish the government would label these groups for exactly what they are.

Republicans have never seen a military program or a piece of military hardware, whether needed or not, that they didn’t love…On the other hand, their standard greeting to ALL our returning military servicemen and women is the same: “Thank yew’ fer’ yer’ service_____NOW FU*K OFF!”

Never ceases to amaze me how many people fall for the hypocritical bluster and Am. flag-lapel-wearing hypocrites in the GOP whose patriotism is a mile wide and an inch deed.

From what I’ve read about Bergdahl’s physical and mental state, he might never recover to the point where he could endure a trial and discipline. I think it’s definitely possible. What will these domestic terrorists do then?

They’ll have long since moved on to other shiny objects of ginned-up outrage. Short attention spans, these folks. Except of course for…

He will unfortunately become another stanza in the relentless, foam-at-the-mouth RWNJ litany of the terrible, horrible, tyrannical, impeachable Obama administration.

No regard for Bergdahl or his family as human beings.

Many Democrats have expressed doubts about the swap of Bergdahl for 5 high level Taliban leaders. No wonder Obama didn’t notify Congress before hand. Surprisingly, Biden was neutral on the deal.

Former CIA and Defense Secretary Panneta expressed concerns about these guys returning to the battlefield. Reportedly, Rob Williams, the national intelligence officer for South Asia, told the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday that four out of five prisoners in the swap are expected to resume activities with the Taliban.

Apparently, Hillary was pushing for a tougher deal with the Taliban and hasn’t publicly said she would have approved this trade.

But, why is Hillary the front runner for 2016? Usually, the sitting VP is heir apparent. Oh, that’s right, it’s Joe Biden. Gotcha.
