Um, who exactly is trying to “control” the “beliefs” of its citizens here? I’d say it’s the Christianists, not the progressives. And the only “Gummints” trying to control their peoples’ beliefs are the red state ones legislating morality for everybody.

The fact of the matter is that our founders set up a system that isn’t supposed to cater to or inhibit religion.
Permitting secular, legal same-sex marriages neither caters to nor inhibits religion. In fact, secular legal marriage has literally no impact on religious marriage at all.
To the contrary, imposing religion-based limitations on secular, legal marriage would have improperly and illegally catered to religion in a sphere outside religion’s constitutionally appropriate scope.
