The real problem here is that the modern Republican party doesn’t understand anything BESIDES messaging. They use laws as if they’re billboards to promote certain lifestyle choices. And so we can’t legalize marijuana because it sends a message that pot smoking is ok. And we can’t raise the minimum wage because it sends the message that it’s ok to be lazy. And we can’t raise taxes on the rich because it sends the message that rich people are evil.
At what point do they realize that laws aren’t messages? They’re laws. And if you want to send a message, post it to Twitter or your website, or say it on the Sunday talk show you’re on for the umpteenth time. And then you’ve sent the message, and if we choose to agree with it, that’s our right. But we’ll probably ignore it, since we’re not idiots who require messages from politicians as to how we should live our own lives. In fact, democracies are supposed to work the other way around, where we send the messages and they do what we say. And then they can resign from Congress and we can replace them with people who actually want to get work done, and not just send symbolic messages. And that way, instead of being attacked by pro-lifers for not being an extremist, you can be one of those pro-lifers attacking politicians for letting people make their own choices.
Because that’s the thing: These people don’t really want to hold political office at all. They ran for political office because it’s how you send the most powerful message. But…Congress isn’t just a platform to get attention for your cause. It’s an actual place with real responsibilities. And if you can’t even craft real legislation and prefer to wait to find out from your opponents what you stand for, then you don’t belong in Congress at all. And yes, I’m a bit of a dreamer for thinking this way.

It’s ironic that the bigger Republican majority is what’s allowing leadership to moderate. Before the last election, the Tea Party contingent was big enough to scuttle anything they could agree upon not liking. It looks like the new majority is comfortable enough to have significantly weakened the TP.

I can’t understand why some people accuse the GOP of being anti-women.
Just like a tree falling in the forest doesn’t make a sound if no one hears it, a rape that is not reported never happened. And an appropriate amount of pressure after the fact can make sure it never is (reported).

Yes! And what’s with this bizarre skepticism they have toward rape victims? Awhile back, they wanted to redefine rape to include only forcible rape. Now they’re just skeptical that a woman was even raped in the first place.

The fiasco of the Republican right continues. They couldn’t govern ten years ago. They can’t govern now.
In the next two years, what makes anyone think they will do any better?
Right wing Republicans are in Congress to do the bidding of their wealthy paymasters on the far right. Yes, their wealthy paymasters sometimes know how to make money, but they know little beyond that. Gee, today’s right wing Republicans might have to read a book now and then. Or listen to their own hearings. Or watch something on TV other than Fox News.
For the sake of our nation, the last thing right wing Republicans should be doing is listening to advice from their aging paymasters. Clue: some of these aging billionaires still think global warming is some sort of hippie thing. Seriously.

When put like this, I think it’s more appropriate to question the party than the message.

Right, but the Republicans have a chance to thread the needle and actually pass something. It is not entirely apparent that they can. What is apparent is this bill is never going to be enacted.
