Bill’s mistake was to testify under oath.

Bush, Cheney, Trump - et al - have learned better.

Sad days.

Chuck Rosenberg was correct in his comments on MSNBC. This was Barr’s opening argument at a jury trial, designed to set the narrative and draw the sting of the bad facts before the jury actually sees the evidence.

The question I would have liked to hear:

“On the issue of obstruction: do you personally fear that you will go to prison like John Mitchell for your obstruction in the release of the Mueller report?”

As long as you have this kind of ridiculous bar(r) in place:

publication of these types of material would not be criminal unless the publisher also participated in the underlying hacking conspiracy.

Then anything goes! Examples include:

Trump was “frustrated and angered by his sincere belief that the investigation was undermining his presidency" so he used tapes of phone conversations made by the GRU to smear his opponents.

Trump was “frustrated and angered by his sincere belief that the investigation was undermining his presidency" so he used voter data files made by the GRU to neutralize Democratic voters using tailored propaganda.

Trump was “frustrated and angered by his sincere belief that the investigation was undermining his presidency" so he used Novichok made by the GRU to poison the investigators.

It is such a stupid argument! We trust the nuclear codes and negotiations with hostile governments to someone who can’t handle pressure. If he can’t handle pressure, he is not qualified to be president.

So if I ever get arrested I can just tell them I was frustrated.

This is so stupid. It’s first semester law school shit he’s violating. This is not what criminal intent means. If it was nobody would ever go to jail.

The point being, he was charged for obstructing justice as well over a matter that wasn’t a crime.

Thank you for this. You reminded me that “I was frustrated and she led me on!” was once a common rape defense.

These traitors know no shame.

No, Billy Boy.
A person who hasn’t had sex with their partner for 6 months is “frustrated”.
Parents who can’t get their teenage children to do their schoolwork every night are “frustrated”.
A person who tries to do their taxes at 11:59 PM on April 14th and realizes they don’t have the smarts to do so on their own is “frustrated”.
Donald Trump wasn’t “frustrated”. Donald Trump was “criminal”.

Every DA in America has to be going Huh? Every criminal defense lawyer in the country just came up with a brand new defense.

We learned about this shit the first fucking week of law school.

Hey, Billy? Do the words “lead balloon” mean anything to you?

Right. This is a huge provocation. He didn’t even make the near-standard concession that sure there were things here and there that might have been done differently, heat of campaign, early days of admin, judgments in hindsight, etc. He didn’t even say Mueller didn’t charge but didn’t exonerate. This was the total exoneration, if still occasionally couched in absurdly careful and narrow language. It’s not a hedge, not a mitigation, he’s gambling this helps Trump get reelected. But it’s gasoline on the garbage fire.

One of my first thoughts was once the reasoning is made clear, will this open the floodgates to appeals? I imagine there’s a lot of people behind bars who met a far narrower standard.

For me, America is looking like the Louvre after the fire.

So, according to Barr’s brilliant statements about Trump and Wikileaks, it is totally, like, absolutely totes adorbs to receive stolen material as long as you didn’t do the hacking yourself.
So wonderful to know! I’ll remember that when someone hacks into a person’s PC and steals their ATM PIN and bank account info and offers it to me free of charge. Hopefully, it will be the accounts of William Barr and Donald Trump.
