weapons to fight a culture war?
OK
This is the story that should headline TPM this morning. Big data in the service of the full on Naziās racism.
As an old fart I found Wylieās slightly outreā appearance when he he first popped up to take the piss out of CA a bit off-putting, and am heartened to see him in a sober suit and tie these days. But I hereby apologize for my narrow-mindedness - Christopher Wylie is a brave, principled young man. My hatās off to him.
Eric Cartman with hobo stubble.
Under Bannonās leadership, the company targeted Facebook posts at African Americans reminding them of comments that Hillary Clinton had made in the 1990s calling young black people āsuper predatorsā to try to keep them from voting, according to the Guardian.
This is free speech, no? If in the 2020 campaign I spread word in the black community Trump dislikes blacks, as evidenced by his words and deeds, I'd find it troubling someone was bitching to Congress about what I'd done.
Cartman his a far kinder soul than Bannon.
NICE! Iāve worked in tech for 40 years and have had to ālook beyondā for years. They are smarter and quicker and more savvy than we ever were. Of course, I tell them we had better IDEAS and they just tell me the Boomers took the low hanging fruitā¦
A couple of things: First, no Russians required. (And no, Aleksandr Kogan is not Russian. He is an American who was born in Moldova.) All of this neo-McCarthyist hemming and hawing about Putin and it once again turns out that we know the real enemy and the real enemy is us. From the endless stream of bile spewed forth on 300 million TV screens and radios, 24/7, from coast to coast via Fox āNewsā, Sinclair Broadcasting and Clear Channel Communications (ironically made possible by Bill Clinton signing the Telecommunications Act of 1996), to the active, illegal, government-driven voter suppression in states controlled by Republicanāts, to the corporate oligarchy masquerading as Democracy, to the Democratic Party nominating the wrong candidate, with the wrong message, at the wrong time, whatever happened on Facebook and Twitter is the proverbial grain of sand on an infinite beach. But we Americans just love our bogeymen, especially if it keeps us from looking in the mirror.
Second, from the Guardian article:
Senator Kamala Harris of California said that Facebookās business model was not always working āin the best interest of the American peopleā.
No shit. You could say that about pretty much any mega corporation in America, especially all of those involved with subprime mortgages. But we all know how she went after them and held them accountable. Once again, from our āleadersā we get nothing but āSQUIRREL!ā
Third, using a politicians past words against them: Yeah, nobodyās ever done that before. Especially my fellow Democrats. We would never do something so gauche! Plus, as steviedee111 pointed out, Free Speech. Pro tip: If you donāt want the past to come back and haunt you, donāt say or do racist, classist, homophobic, misogynist, or ugly shit. Of course, many times we donāt know weāre doing racist, classist, homophobic, misogynist, or ugly shit, because at that time, for whatever reason, many people find that racist, classist, homophobic, misogynist, or ugly shit acceptable, or at least tolerated. But times change, and if you do say or do racist, classist, homophobic, misogynist, or ugly shit. and it does come back to haunt you, own up to it. Donāt use that reckoning to paint yourself as the victim.
Bannon has some fine qualities, if you like tapeworms.
Very true, Ron. If this is true and can be confirmed, it should lead every news outlet. Then, quite fairly, people should as if Trump knew it and when he knew.
Said way too many times, but can you even imagine if Hillary or Obama were accused of surprising the white vote? Just imagine that for a second.
Since the mainstream media likes to cover tweets instead of stories, maybe they can actually do a journalistic job of bringing this manufactured culture war to the top of their news lineup. (After hurricanes and school shootings of course)
Itās not exactly free speech when the entire intent is to brainwash and manipulate people without their knowledge or consent. The issue heās raising is that CA, based on Bannonās need for a culture war, manipulated the messages going into FB feeds in order to suppress the vote. It worked in Detroit and one of the biggest towns in Wisconsin (Minnesota?), the percentage of African American votes was down a lot in both cities. They used, and are still using, other FB feeds to stir anti-Muslim, anti-other of all kinds, to stoke their fear-based agenda.
Mr. Wylie is my hero.
Since when the hell is it illegal to manipulate peopleās minds for your own ends? With or without their knowledge or consent? Did you agree to have Roseanne sipping from that can of Coke on her television show? Did you agree to the sidebar ad for a Ford truck on this blog? People are free to surreptitiously manipulate others as much as they want.
Of course he did.
Because allās fair in love and the culture wars.
In most cases, I agree with you. CA & Bannonās intent and game plan was wrong, underhanded, and to me, evil. Keep in mind that this manipulation has been going on for 5 years on FB, these people have now seen this crap for so long they donāt know anything else. It totally explains the cultist behavior of PPās followers. This is not truck shopping where you can see and touch the product. This is corrupt manipulation for Bannonās self-serving needs & wants.
Iāve been watching this manipulation of a FB acquaintance for the last year, itās not pretty.
Being on Facebook is a voluntary act. Sheep are there to be fleeced.
Who would have been the right Democrat to face Trump?
Compared to HRC,why would that person have been a better nominee?
