Discussion: Baltimore Questions Fatal Police Arrest That Left Man With Severed Spinal Cord

Discussion for article #235480

“We are tired of the words. We want to see action,” Murphy said Sunday. "We want to see fair compensation for victims of police brutality…

[emphasis mine]

We who? The only person thinking of ‘fair compensation’ is the family’s attorney. I don’t know enough about the case to render an opinion on what happened or who’s at fault, but the attorney is an idiot - the family picked the wrong guy to help them out.

Words fail at yet another police brutality outrage, and the aggrieved deserve more than easy snark. I wish that a nationwide, pro-bono, legal movement would sue each and every involved officer, whether “cleared” by internal investigation or not, as well as the police departments that hired them. If money is America’s god, then the time has passed for some divine retribution!

How about you scroll through my comment history and see if that makes any sense. I’m talking about the idiot attorney making this sound like an economic issue (“fair compensation”) as if there is ANY compensation fair enough to equal a life. He makes it look like the family is just in it for the money instead of for justice. My comment is about the attorney, not about the merits or failings of the case. Maybe you should ask some clarifying questions and get your facts straight before you shoot off your mouth at people.

Its hard to break a young mans back.

I’ve wrestled, played hockey and baseball. Its really hard to break a young man’s back.

Someone needs to pay for this.

Why is this a surprise to anyone that somebody’s neck finally got broken during what appears to be SOP with police forces everywhere. It appears that even when a “subject” doesn’t resist and is waiting to be handcuffed he is grabbed by a “group” of officers, thrown to the ground and at least one officer stands on the individuals head and/or neck while other officers pull his arms back and cuff him. Look at old video of arrests from all over the country and you will see it. I have been screaming at the TV for decades when I see this “stuff” because it is often not necessary. Screaming at the TV won’t change anything but the whole scene is pathetic.

This young man was “taken for a ride” - a commonly used tactic by urban police forces. They use it to punish an individual in custody for not showing the desired degree of respect to arresting officers or for resisting.

Essentially they put the individual in the back of a paddy wagon with their legs in shackles and wrists cuffed behind their back and proceed to drive fast and furious over potholes, rough roads etc. I can almost guarantee that’s what happened here… Person gets tossed around and roughed up without the cops ever laying a hand on them.
