Plus the taxpayers are footing the bill for these gub’mint haters.
I’ll believe it when I see it.
And if they arrest even one now chances are all hell will break loose and the Oath Keepers and whatever other freak shows are waiting in the wings will descend upon the scene, maybe try some idiotic jailbreak–clearly all these folks have watched WAY too much TV.
I am quite proud of my state. I have heard “if they were black blah blah” but, nah, I don’t really that’s the case. What do think is the case is if this had happened in Texas some people would already be dead and other people would be wringing their hands wondering if there wasn’t some better way to handle a situation like this.
They’d have to ask the militia guys to drain the pipes.
On Planet Oregon where we tend to have calm, intelligent and friendly law enforcement officers more concerned about public safety than their personal ego.
And therefore you don’t do it? This is the dumbest fucking thing, and people keep bringing it up like it’s actually a good point or something.
When a guy walks into a school firing a weapon, he knows he is going to die there. You might even say he wants to die there.
So…you just let him walk away afterwards?
I did enjoy that. Ryan Bundy displayed a variant on Affluenza that seems to run strong in this group. It’s not the money, but the attitude of privilege that seems to drive them. “You’re not the boss of me. I can do anything I want to. Why should I pay for gas when it’s my right to just have some when I want it? Why should I pay a park fee when I’m such a special snowflake? The park belongs to me anyway. No cops have the authority to stop me when I steal the gas and blow through the park. Why should I pay anybody for anything if I don’t feel like it? Why should I obey any laws, 'cause you know they don’t apply to me.”
I wonder what happened to him after that series of incidents? Whatever it was, he sure didn’t learn anything.
That’s all well and good. However, this stunt combined with the relative hands-off response and tail tucked between legs approach to the Cliven Bundy affair legitimately risks emboldening militia type nutjobs to commit ever more similar transgressions. I don’t disagree with duly weighing response tactics and avoiding excesssive measures, but shouldn’t consideration be given to what is being signaled to like-minded scofflaws? Laws and those empowered to enforce those laws exist in large measure to deter what we see happening in Oregon. What good is skipping the deterrence phase in your actions? I don’t see that deterrence is even a consideration on the part of authorities. Has anyone involved in the Cliven Bundy episode suffered any punishment or sanctions for brandishing firearms and daring the Feds to make a move? To an outside observer it seems these guys can do what they damn well please and the government and their laws can piss off.
“He just wants us to arrest him taking a load of fertilizer and kerosene up to a federal building. We’ll show him! We’ll just let him blow it up! Eleventy-billion dimensional chess! Fuck yeah!”
Just like in Nevada, right?
I understand the logic of leaving the power on, in terms of damage to the building.
But why are they still free to go grocery shopping?
On Planet I’m a White, Heavily Armed Christian and the President’s a Lazy Mooslim Negro So I’m Totally Justified.
Even leaving the power on is no logic.
What you’re doing is giving the anti-gummint loons instructions how what works and what doesn’t. Want to keep from having your power cut? Well, shit grab a place where the pipes might freeze. Want to be allowed to come and go as you please? Bring some assault rifles. It’s not so much that the gummit is afraid you’ll kill some cops, it’s that they’ll be afraid of the bad publicity from shooting your fat ass. Want to make absolutely certain they won’t force their way in? Bring the wife and kids!
I wonder what we’ll learn from the next incident? Bring one black guy as a token? Of course, that might get dangerous - the cops may take a shot at him, miss, and hit a fellow cracker.
Just to be clear I have zero idea what ought to be done about this and hold no brief for one approach over another. I’m just speculating on what the rationale might be for what’s happening out there. They could have a psychologically sound plan that has the best chance of bringing about an optimal outcome, or they could be totally flummoxed—I have no idea.
And I’m not sure if much has changed, but I think the reason that they’re allowed to come and go freely is because there aren’t any law enforcement types anywhere near the place. So no photo ops of “Look at poor us surrounded. Waco! Ruby Ridge! Remember the Alamo!”
No. Nevada was their chance to back off and act like grownups. Now there will be arrests. Guaranteed.
OWS were given a lot of leeway at first too. They were illegally camped out in a park, and no one bothered them, which was fine. But when they started to abuse it and blocked a bridge, arrests followed, which was also fine (that was over the top).
Same here, these assholes are not getting what they want, and many of them will be arrested.
…and forcing the BLM to be the bad guys. I mean, I can see them having to in some cases, bur this?
Kind of ironic when you consider that so many anti-govt militia types claim that real power resides historically in local sheriffs.
Yes, that is an absurd analogy. If BLM had a protest going in the middle of nowhere (which is where this is), the same thing would be happening.
And if these assholes took over an area of government building in the middle of a city, the Feds would be bringing in troops and busting them, and if they resisted the Feds would gas them, and if they took a shot at the Feds, they would get shot at back with weapons that blow away what they have.
You make an excellent point.
It’s not like it’s saving money to let them stay there. The building could be rebuilt for the cost of all the law enforcement salaries throughout the winter. Let the pipes explode.
(I did see a photo earlier that included one black guy, btw.)
