I also have an obligation to the people of Arizona whether theyāre Republican or Democratic or whatever
Wow. Heās never cared before now. I wonder if his latest poll numbers have prompted this sudden concern about all of the citizens of Arizona, even the Democratic ones.
when Iāve done things for political reasons, Iāve always regretted it. When Iāve done things because they were the right thing to do, Iāve never regretted it.<<<
I believe him on this and it goes some way toward explaining his (to me) inexplicable shifts from being reasonable and bi-partisan to being very UNreasonable - sometimes not even rational! And I bet I can guess, very safely, one of the chief examples of something he did for political reasons ā¦ and deeply regretted. And well he should.
McCain said without women he couldnāt have been elected to the U.S. Senate.
Or been born.
Jesus Freaking Christ, this guy has absolutely no political smarts. If heād had half a clue, he would have publicly roasted Trump over a year ago when Trump sneered at McCainās POW status during Vietnam. Say what you want about McCainās overall military record and political stances since, but he did put himself in harmās way in service to the country while Trump stayed safe back home due to an ingrown toenail or whatever the fuck it was. All McCain needed to do was take a clear and forthright position that Trumpās statement was a clear insult to all veteransānot just POWsāand that as a result he was never going to support him, period. Coming from a position of respect for the American military, I donāt think McCain would have suffered greatly overall. But his habitual waffling and refusal to stand up for not only himself but for all U.S. servicemen and women when he had the chance took his own legs out from under him.
And I bet I can guess, very safely, one of the chief examples of something he did for political reasons ā¦ and deeply regretted.
Thereās a very direct line from Sarah Palin to Donald Trump. It would be interesting to survey Trumpers to find out their degree of support for her. Iād be very surprised if the average Trumper wasnāt also a big fan of Palin. āThank You Lord Jesus for President Trumpā is pure Palin supporter.
An actual profile in courage. Not sure how it will impact him, but he can keep his integrity on this intact.
McCain has worked with Hillary and respects her. They may not agree, but their are old school politicians who understand democracy depends on dialogue and compromise.
Trump understands NONE of that or anything about how our democracy works. Good on ya Johnā¦just hope one of your Trumpster voters doesnāt go nuclear on someone. In this kind of climate, anything could happen in the next three plus weeks. Frightening times.
āI do what I believe is right. I am a loyal Republican, but I also have an obligation to the people of Arizona whether theyāre Republican or Democratic or whatever,ā McCain said.
Interesting. Iāve never seen a Republican of modern vintage give a fig about Dems or Independents. Could it be Senator McCain realizes his reelection prospects depends on broadening his base of support? Too little, too lateā¦I would hope
āHe made a number of other comments and I always left it alone,ā McCain said, noting that Trump had gone after a Gold Star family.
āHe even went after me. But I left it alone. Why? Because Iām a spineless fucking asshole who spends his days staring out the window of my Senate office at an orange aviation windsock. (Iām a renowned pilot, you know.) And I watch its direction, measure the speed, waiting to pounce like a jaguar, fart, and make a decision.ā
āIt wasnāt a comment. It was a statement about what he did,ā McCain said. āI found that frankly something that I canāt support. I have a wife, I have daughters. Iām proud to serve in the Senate with outstanding women.ā
āYou see, without an excuse like this, I see no reason to take a principled stand, even when such a stand and a few steps would get me to the bathroom. I need an excuse, good reason, to make that stand.ā
McCain said without women he couldnāt have been elected to the U.S. Senate.
"In addition to everyone else on the planet, this man has insulted women. And now Iām afraid Iām going to lose my job. And women hold the key to my keeping my job. Sure, heād already insulted women many times before, everyone else on the planet and, even, common decency. Heās even insulted me. And I did nothing. Well, I endorsed him, I guess thatās something. But this time itās different. I really want to keep my job. Although I donāt do a goddamned thing, I can finally find my way around Washington in my chaffuer-driven car, the black one that Carl stands by. So please, let me keep my job. Besides, everybody knows my name.
āIām hungry.ā
Psst. Fuck you, Sid McCrashcup!
Mmmm-I donāt know, Senator ā¦ this sounds like a CYA leaked audio, to me.
āAt least I donāt plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt!ā
ā John McCain, 1992, on respecting women
Thatās a lot of words to say āClose your eyes, lie back, think of Reagan, and suckle that cheese curd.ā
Well, Iām gonna take him at his word this time. Democrats arenāt going to vote for him, and I think he suspects heās going down with the ship by dumping Trump - though he was probably going down if he stuck with Trump. In any event, better now to find a conscience than never.
I dunno. He allowed the same right wing group in the GOP who thought Dan Quayle would assure the Red Meat Vote to persuade him that Sara Palin was qualified and would give him the Hillary Primary Voters. Since losing the Presidency to Obama, John McCain has acted in no way that I would consider courageous. He has been the spokesperson for the GOP second guess machine on foreign policy. He, and the entire GOP Senate group, participated in the disgraceful 450 Filibusters against President Obama. He and Lindsay Graham went after Susan Rice. He signed the Tom Cotton-Bill Kristol Letter to the Ayatollahs. John McCain is as courageous as a weather vane.
These remarks from McCain please me, but I agree with you they are far too late. He could indeed have taken the wind out of āwindysā sails early onā¦ but he gambled. Like with Palin, which is an unpardonable sin.
Chortle!
Firstā¦
Iām glad ya split with Trump, John ā¦
Second ā¦
I hope AZ dumps ya this time ā
Since the Keating Five days this guy has been forgetting and then relearning the lesson that acting with integrity is actually a good thing to do on the regular. Itās something most of us figure out before middle school. And every single one of those GOP hopeful SOBs could have attacked Trump back when it might have made a difference. In May, before the Indiana primary, Cruz denounced Trump in exactly the same terms any one of us might have used, but it was too late at that point. They all wanted to play this coy little game of pretending Trump was fine, waiting for the inevitable flameout, and scooping up his followers. Howād that work out for them? Screw McCain and his charade of mavericky morality. All the lurches toward decency do is throw the reckless opportunism into higher and more hypocritical relief. Palin will be in every obituary written about him and should probably be on his damn headstone too. Screw him.
āWhy is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because Janet Reno is her father.ā
-----John McCain, 1998, at a Republican fundraiser (Chelsea Clinton was 18 years old at the time).
Donāt forget his vote against legislation in 2013 to prevent military commanders from arbitrarily reversing sexual assault military court-martials.
McCain is scum.
Ut-oh, the crazy baggers not voting for you jony?
Thatās too bad!
Slippery as an eelā¦
