Discussion: As Shutdown Looms, Trump Meets With GOP Leaders Over Border Wall

Trump is seeking $5 billion for the wall, a centerpiece of his 2016 campaign, and is ratcheting up pressure on Congress to provide it

What happened to the Mexican funding? Surely tRump can get a few billion out of El Chapo in exchange for a full pardon… it’s The Art of the Deal

A partial shutdown works for me. Let Spanky deal with no money to pay Ice and Customs employees. No money for more teargas either. Yup works for me just great.

The Mexicans are not taking our jobs. Our jobs are being sent to Mexico.

Well, we know how that went.

Has there been any defense of blocking the ‘protect Mueller’ bills other than saying “He doesn’t need protection?” That’s the only thing I’ve heard them say.

They all mouth the words that Mueller should be able to finish his job, and protecting him wouldn’t cost a penny. What are their stated reasons (and why isn’t the press asking them)?

Clearer Trump: give me a political victory or we will continue to use violence on desperate foreign children.

While a partial shutdown works for me too, I believe (but I could be wrong) there is something about keeping funding available for “national security” (in Trumpworld ICE, etc.) even if the other poor schmoes kick their heels at home and lose $$.

Have this fight now. Caving will only result in another fight next year. Have the showdown now.

It’s for standoffs like this that Democrats needs to have a permanent, meta-narrative. “The GOP is unfit for power.” “Republicans always bankrupt the country. Always crash the economy. Here we again.” If these no-brainer branding narratives were in place, as they should have been since the financial crash, perceptions of this fight would be very different. Instead we have the politics of micro-appeasement led by the cinematically idiotic Chuck Schumer. Where are the counter demands? What do we stand for? Where is the PR counterattack?

Military has plenty of money. Why don’t they use that and the military to build the wall. They could pile up all the old and blown up tanks, trucks and humvees. I mean at least if they were building a wall in US, less would get killed and they be closer to home.

I have no doubt that a competent administration would have no problem doing what you say but I think you can figure out the problem in this case. Also they have been funding DHS with “emergency funds” since the end of the fiscal year on Oct 1.

That’s too subtle a distinction for the MAGA crowd.

Considering the GOP have basically given up on legislation and want to go home, I doubt they’d fund as much as a fence

You lost me at “competent” :smirk:

I suspect, though, that Spankee would order someone to find funds somewhere under some provision — perhaps funds from all those unfilled ambassadorships?

So here’s a question for AP:

If, as everyone agrees, the rightwing nutbar contingent of the GOP will likely make it necessary to get democrats’ votes for this bill in the House (and those pesky rules will make it necessary in the Senate) why not talk to more of the people on whose decisions the passage of the bill depends? Instead of quoting the soon-to-be-minority about democratic plans.

“Let’s put people before politics”
Sigh
Also, “Trump Meets with…”
He doesn’t “meet” with anyone. “Meeting” requires some minimum amount of attention. He sputters incoherently at GOP Leaders. They ignore him, ride back to their offices cracking jokes. Back to Executive Time.
