Discussion: As Conservative States Pass Sweeping Anti-Abortion Laws, IL Bolsters Women's Rights

How refreshing is this? It’s almost like The Enlightenment of 2019.

Why do I get the feeling we’re going to see more film companies over there?

Wow, Illinois actually gets it. Thank you, Governor Pritzker…

This is going to make the job of the forced-birth faction on the supreme court a little more complicated when they face the chance of not only overturning Roe but declaring abortion illegal nationwide. They’d really like to find a “states’ rights” argument that makes it ok for states to experiment with killing women and imprisoning doctors but not ok for states to empower women and support doctors.

Dysfunctional Illinois gets something right! I was born in Illinois, and often take a snarky pride in the darker side of Illinois politics. I remember once voting for candidate for Attorney General then under indictment for Income Tax evasion because I thought he was genuinely less evil than the other guy. And I remember Illinois refusing to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. So today I’m taking actual pride, not merely snarky pride, in my former home state.

But wait, isn’t Illinois the home of Lincoln, who was a Republican? And this was passed by Democrats in Lincoln’s home state? What’s a modern-day Republican to do? They must be very confused.

I expect they’ll pick up a few call centers, too, since that seems to be the only business actually growing these days.

The Carbondale area just got a new, far more regular source of visitors than solar eclipses.
