Whether its bad for politics or not, they must start impeachment. Are we a nation of laws or are we not?
Thank you, Speaker Pelosi. We need someone to advocate for the American people. Enough is enough. And in this case I, it’s been more than enough and we are thoroughly disgusted.
Sadly, law doesn’t always win. Maybe they should win in politics first and then start to clear the mess (just a possibility, I’m not sure what to do).
The Dems were always going to face the impeachment dilemma if they took control of the House. Donald Trump is fundamentally unfit to be POTUS and commits an impeachable offense virtually every week. As musgrove argues, can Dems ignore this just for political expedience?
It’s not.
From the Nadler thread:
I don’t know what all the pearl clutching is about Impeachment. I keep hearing about how much it hurt the GOP back in 1998. Big deal, they lost 5 seats in the House, but still kept a 12 vote majority. The Senate remained the same, 55 R – 45-D, with some seats flip-flopping. Then, in 2000 we got W Bush. Keep in mind this all happened with Bill Clinton up around +70% in the polls. Trump has yet to crack > 45% in most polls other than Rasmussen. I’m assuming we’d all take similar results in 2020, parties reversed. I know I would.
As PBO would say, “C’mon, man !”
Hold multiple hearings to reiterate all of the evidence against Trump in public. Let everyone hear what he did over and over in order to wear down his base. Pelosi is right, until you have 20 Republicans in the Senate willing to remove him, impeaching Trump is just a waste of time.
If none of Trump’s actions clearly constituted obstruction of justice, then what does obstruction need to look like to be criminal? IANAL. But it seems like the intent was there (Lester Holt interview, Oval Office with Russians, let Flynn go comment, end of presidency outburst, etc.), right?
In 2008, I think they could look back and felt they did the right thing, be it luck or calculation. Don’t know what they’ll feel in 2020. It all depends on the elections. But then that seems like a chicken and egg question.
I totally agree with your first 2 sentences. But I disagree about impeachment being a waste unless you are sure you have the R votes in the Senate. Musgrove is asking the right question - are we a country of laws or not? Swing voters are waiting to see if the Dems are willing to fight for the rule of law and hold Trump accountable. Even if the Senate doesn’t convict, we’ll know where each Senator stands regarding the rule of law.
Well, we used to be, but right now we’re in a corrupt, criminal, liars phase where the king can do no wrong.
I’m still hoping the Dems will find out enough from the redacted report to make it worthwhile to go for impeachment. tRump needs to be put in his disgraced place.
No need to rush into Impeachment, only fools rush in. But, there’s gonna come a time when “sternly worded letters” ain’t gonna cut it with a lot of angry, frustrated Democrats.
Congress won’t be silent?
That’s what I’m afraid of.
All that squawking and bleating and gutless posturing is just disturbing noise.
And then there’s the cowardly Steny Hoyer wing … he could, at the very least, have kept his mouth shut yesterday while people were still reading the goddamn report.
Steny Hoyer needs to be slapped upside the head. What a gutless maroon.
The fact that people even have to ask themselves if it’s worth it to try to impeach a president who invited a foreign power to help him win his election just goes to show how much Trump’s constant, unrelenting, overbearing lawlessness has worn everyone down.
It’s not Donnie Moscow as much as the compliant rethuglican party. If they stood for America the shithouse rat/cancer that has consumed the WH would be removed in a NY minute.
All of the paragraphs that start with “But” in this article are why AP is total garbage.
But what comes next may not be any more conclusive, especially as Democrats say they are unwilling to consider impeachment without bipartisan support from Republicans.
Mitch McConnell rules the Democrats.
No point in having an opposition party that is afraid to actually oppose.
You’re forgetting the part where Clinton got re-elected.
So in your grand we must (fail to) Impeach Trump! You’re cool with the status quo? Keeping the House, having no chance at the Senate and not winning the white house?
Uh, no. Re read it.
Clinton was re-elected in 1996.
