Discussion for article #222351
so whats the problem…oh yeah your job is more important that the lives of thousands of people in your state…
Truly a profile in courage.
When did Jim Gaffigan become an Arkie Attorney General?
How is this different and less honorable than a lawyer defending a really awful client? Shouldn’t the people who voted for the ban get a hearing?
Hypocrite Dixiecrat is hypocritical!
You and everyone else who would defend a ban on same sex marriage needs to explain the harm it does to others who engage in opposite sex marriage. What a same sex couple does is none of anyone else’s business. That’s all you need to know.
He’s one of our allies! I can’t believe the people on this site who are attacking him. As Attorney General he has a DUTY to defend the laws that the state passed, good for him for stating openly (and being the first elected official in the state!) to come out and say that he opposes the law. His position as Arkansas AG gives us (the LGBT community) someone high up in elective office who understands our community better than any Republican in AR ever could even if his job requires him to defend a law that he finds odious.
Every intelligent lawyer in the country sees that the Supreme Court (and the lower courts and State Courts) are moving towards recognizing marriage as a civil right) and I’m sure that AG McDaniel understands that too and knows that AR’s defense of their anti-marriage equality will come to nothing.
Recognize who are enemies are, Dustin McDaniel is NOT our enemy. He is an ally being forced to defend a law that he doesn’t like. Lay off.
You make the point to be made here. It takes a mature personality to grasp and appreciate the incredibly difficult position the AR AG has to deal with. I agree that he must uphold the law, even when he does not personally endorse it. And, when the law changes to accommodate equality, I am sure he would defend it as unbiasedly as he did here. He does deserve the respect of liberals for the measure of personal integrity he has shown in the face of adversity.
An attorney general willing to uphold the laws of their state is a rarity these days.
I won’t knock the guy.
Personally, I consider this progress.
MAN BITES DOG! A liberal AG who enforces the law! Holy s…t.
He’s trying to have it both ways.
Appeal to Democrats by saying he supports marriage equality then pander to the bigots by defending the discriminatory law.
why, he’s not required to defend a law he believes is unconstitutional on its face.
"But McDaniel said he’ll continue defending a 2004 state constitution amendment defending marriage as between a man and a woman.
all he’ll be doing is wasting more AR taxpayer’s money, defending a law that’s already been bounced in several states, and that he must realize has less than a snowball’s chance of a successful defense.
