Discussion: Arizona School District

The sticker is simply a regurgitation of the state law, though. Last year Tempe’s more liberal district had its sex ed curriculum challenged because it was in violation of the state’s requirement to promote childbirth and abstinence.

The conservative leadership loves a bigger government more than we do.

Our Gov. Ducey is doing all he can to be a Brownback clone.
And once again Gilbert, AZ shows it’s self to be a den of stupidity.

When I lived there (during the Ev Mecham years!) we called them “Zonies.”

For Pete’s sake, I went to a Catholic high school and we never saw anything like this. Our teacher did tell us that the only 100% foolproof way to avoid pregnancy was abstinence, but we learned how effective all the other methods were as well. And we covered abortion in health class and there were no moral discussions about it. It was just one more method of birth control that was impractical because it was more expensive and slightly more medically dangerous than avoiding conception in the first place. I remember one girl in our class raised her hand and said, “Well I think that’s disgusting.” Without batting an eye, the teacher said, “Then you shouldn’t do it, honey.” and went right on with the lesson. As far as I know, there weren’t a lot of unplanned pregnancies during my four years there.

WHY did the students have to affix the sticker to the books?
Why didn’t the district have that done before handing out the books?

(a) because that’s some shady message-forcing right there.

This is appalling!

They’re making the kids start school in August?

I have an idea. Rather than putting just one sticker in some textbook, give the individual students sheets of these stickers. That way, they can put one over each ear, over their eyes, and as many as needed over their mouths at the same time. Then, the students will be all nice and ready for the “education” that the People’s Republic of Arizona is ready to give to them.

Kids should go to school year round, on the 45/15 plan. (45 days on, then 15 off.) the archaic custom of three months off in the summer time hasn’t been valid in almost a century. Kids no longer have to help to harvest crops before the winter comes.

There are better ways. I worked at a Catholic high school for years. The head health teacher is a former priest, still a devout Catholic and this is how he worked. When the curriculum got to reproduction, he told the students the stance of the Catholic Church, then he gave them the full curriculum, including birth control. He says it would be wrong to send hormonal teenagers out into the world without that knowledge. Of course it’s all very low key, but so far there haven’t been any complaints.

I’d like to see how students have altered those stickers by the end of the school year.

Well, you have to admit that she provides truth in advertising.

Hey, I’m cool with a pro-adoption sticker, as long this sticker gets in the book too:

And this one:

If she’s new to Gilbert, she’s in for a rude awakening about her neighbors. The politicians are crazy but they’re entirely representative.

Aside from the part about adoption, I don’t think it’s necessarily bad advice. Kids should talk with their parents about this stuff. Of course, I’m sure there’s a slippery slope here.

I have to say yet again that not everyone in the state wherein I reside (Arizona) is a nut case.
