Discussion: AP Poll: 33 Percent Of Young Americans Approve Of Trump's Job Performance

No wonder the right wing loonies were flipping out about the March for Our Lives. Motivated youth are their ultimate boogie man.

Yep, those young people are now March(ing) to the Polls.

Hahahahahahaha

One-third is still shockingly high, given that young people tend not to spend their evenings rotting in their chairs watching Faux News. We have radicalized a generation of young ‘Christian’ fascists. That bodes well for our dumbocracy.

Cue the intrepid NYT reporter traveling to Indiana and the South Bronx in search of the young Trump supporter. When it comes to Trump, 33% might as well be 90% as far as the MSM is concerned.

With regard to Trump’s 33% approval rating, I bet in any large population, we would find that 33%:

Like to breathe bus fumes
Like to chew on foil
Like to take cold showers
Like light beer
Enjoy watching reruns of “Hazel”

Money = Sane

Simple logic.

“If he was mentally unfit, I don’t think he would have made as much money as he did, but I can see why people would think that,” he said. “I’m not a fan of his incessant need for Twitter. He acts like a child.”

How many contradictions can we count here?

A child from a FOX News’addled home, no doubt…

Except he didn’t, rather he incurred potentially crippling debt, most of it from the most dangerous people on the planet.

If he wasn’t washing their rubles for them they wouldn’t give him a dime…

Trump succeeded in business?

There’s a patent falsehood that seems to be locked in to the Trump apologists of every age.
That’s 9 points lower than all adults, who were asked the same question on a separate AP-NORC survey taken this month.
Do those numbers include the ~80% of this youth poll who are adults? If so what do those numbers look like if you exclude them?

It ought to be below 20 percent but even as a majority of the coming generation displays an impressive amount of activism and intelligence, there’s also an element among this generation that is doing one or more of the following:
-doubling down on reality TV and associating the biggest and baddest bully with actual strength
-trying to poke the Establishment in the eye and viewing that as more important than anything else
-following parental and social cues on racism and xenophobia
-responding to Trump’s cues on free trade and job security
Unfortunately, mainstream conservatism does not enter into it; it seems to be almost dead in this country, and that’s a dangerous place for a democracy. If conservatism splinters into reactionary incoherence, conspiracy theories and fake news abound, and everyone from Konrad Adenauer to Niall Ferguson over the years has pointed out the danger of that (it tends to lead to continental or world war)
Also, looking at these numbers, it suggests Trump is pretty resilient with white 18-34 year olds; probably a 50-50 split there, so not much different from the election when he carried them by an estimated four points.

This is promising, and I’m hoping that the March for Our Lives and any associated movements can lionize younger people to get out and vote and then remain engaged, but what also needs to happen is that this all needs to be hung around the Republican party’s neck, and not just Trump’s. It’s only a matter of time before Trump fully implodes one way or another. When that happens, the GOP and their media empire will do everything they can to force a narrative that Trump wasn’t actually one of theirs or that he was just an outlier that won’t happen again. It’s the Republican party that’s toxic. Trump is just another byproduct of it who is just too goddamned stupid to keep the more vile elements of it behind closed doors. I’m hoping that younger Americans coming of age in the Trump era will see that and remember it.

This is heartening in so many ways.

Yet there’s a terrifying nugget in there - 54% think he’s being treated unfairly by the media. Mediated experience is replacing actual experience at such an alarming rate that there is an awful lot of room for “mind changing” by the people who have currently hijacked the government. Getting fish to understand that they’re swimming in water is rather difficult. Manipulation of the medium isn’t.

33%? I weep for the future. Then again, I don’t see how it could get much worse than the present.

This would be where I repeat my theory that in any given population of a democratic country, there will always be somewhere between a quarter to a third of the people who are innately authoritarian.

The number is slippery because there’s definitely a nurture and nature thing going. An authoritarian state with full control of media and the educational system can always make more people think and act like authoritarians. And in any democracy there are going to be subpopulations where people’s parents have put them into rigid, controlling environments that basically replicate totalitarian propaganda and education.

But the irreducible number seems to be in the 25-33% range–people who are just wired for authoritarian thinking. They have a collection of traits that correlate strongly with conservatism–lower than average fear and disgust thresholds, lack of empathy for out-group member. It makes them want to take orders and, more importantly, see others–especially Other others–forced to do and act Rightly.

Because the things that make them authoritarian are also traits that tend to correlate with conservatism, most of these people naturally gravitate to the right. But a distressingly large fraction end up on the left.

Memo to the sane 67% of young adults: Get the fuck out and VOTE!!!
