Discussion: AP-NORC Poll: Religious Rights Most Vital For US Christians

Discussion for article #244182

More Americans should read the 14th amendment after they read the 1st amendment. Neither selects one group over another. In fact the 14th makes everyone equal before the law.

“On a more general level, 42 percent in the poll say it’s more important for the government to ensure Americans’ safety than to protect their rights, while 27 percent think rights are more important and 31 percent rate both equally.”

I wonder if that includes giving up their religion for safety? I wonder if they thought about it at all.

My guess is no.

It’s all about other people giving up their rights, and never about personally giving up any rights. That is clearly evident when questions regarding specific religions come up.

So basically, the prevailing attitude is, “My rights are important. Yours? Not so much.”

Unfortunately, I’m not surprised.

I wonder how many of the answers on the job the government is doing protecting the right to bear arms come from people who think that right is being protected a bit too much (analogous to the way that a significant fraction of the polled opposition to the ACA was that it wasn’t single-payer).

Yeah…but it’s not really about religious freedom is it? Hobby Lobby was not about religious freedom. It was about imposing Mr. Hobby Lobby’s religion, under cover of law, on others. That’s what it was really about. It was about evangelism…and putting the power of the law behind those that evangelize. There was never a threat to anyone’s Christianity. That was bullshit. But many Christians will not rest until you are living as they want you to. Mr. Hobby Lobby and Justice Scalia are like that. Now they can bend you to their will.

i live in a gerrymandered GOP district with many fundies. There’s a church seemingly on every block.
Not exactly a persecuted minority holding services in the catacombs.
82% of Americans self-identify as Christians.

It is a “saving your wife or your mother from drowning” question. We need to be safe and we need to be free. I don’t think the answer is particularly relevant, when you make someone pick one or the other.

Let’s be honest and realistic…The fundies don’t want rights or religious freedom.

They want to impose their own form of sharia law on everyone else that they don’t actually follow themselves.

To say they define hypocrisy is an understatement of epic proportions for a group as a whole that has already thrown their entire belief system in the trash to explicitly exclude one black guy.

Unfortunately to many Christians Freedom of Religion for them is defined as the right to oppress anyone who doesn’t believe as they do.

That’s actually down to close to 70% now. A sign of progress.

That is evident when questions about anything comes up.

No it really was about religious liberty. It was about the government forcing Mr. Hobby Lobby to take an action that conflicted with his religion.
